Anita Washington presents a book not only about her own abusive experience growing up, but also seven steps she used to overcome the victim mentality. Family is Not Everything: How to Minimize Their Mess, Maximize Your Happiness, and Enjoy Emotional Baggage Breakthroughs; is not underestimating the value of family, but explaining that not everyone comes from a "Happy Days" dream home life. If you are one of those from a dysfunctional household, there is hope in breaking away without the guilt, shame, and anger. By following this author's story, you will find a strength to distance yourself from people who pull you away from a positive lifestyle.I found Anita Washington's message powerful and sad at the same time. By giving her story she shows it isn't easy to break from an abusive life and she admits the mistakes she made while trying to distance herself from folks. She also shows why sometimes people who grow one in a poor environment end up in the same kind of relationship they try to avoid. This is an excellent read and very intense.
Family Is Not Everything: How to Minimize Their Mess, Maximize Your Happiness and Enjoy Emotional Baggage Breakthroughs by Anita Washington is a highly personal book that imparts the author's knowledge and experiences in a meaningful way. For those that think family is everything, that might need to be re-thought. Full of personal stories and anecdotal evidence, Washington examines society's preconceived idea that before all and above all, we must retain our family connections. While on the surface this may seem to be a grand idea, for some it merely reaffirms the need to stay away and to protect oneself from further emotional abuse. With seven simple steps, you can claim your power, and move forward with your life if that is what you need to do. Washington writes succinctly, with grace and courage, and certainly provides an inspiring look at re-claiming your life. You can succeed and prosper in spite of having a dysfunctional family life. Highly recommend for a positive and motivational book.
Growing up I was raised that Family comes first. No matter what, the needs of the whole family unit were to be put in front of my own needs. This book was excellent in reinforcing the idea that took me years to learn. Namely that if I cannot be happy and help myself then how can I realistically expect to be able to help others? Also, if one of my family members is toxic for me (mentally, emotionally or physically), then I owe it to myself to stop contact with them. The author, Anita Washington, helps us learn valuable lessons by giving us access to her own troubled past. She helps us understand how we can overcome the label of victim and claw our way out of the abused victim mindset. I found this book to be extremely enlightening and well written. I will definitely recommend it to some of my friends that will be able to apply the teachings to their own situations.
I read this book with great interest, my hopes for it being based on my personal experiences and how often I see such themes in other people’s lives, that I might take on ideas to better help myself, and others.Washington takes a very personal approach and gives very much detail, to the point of autobiography, as which this book could perhaps equally have been classified. This does indeed lend a much greater sense of credibility to where she’s coming from, having highlighted in great detail not only the struggles of coming from such a family, but also the ongoing process of progressing from that trauma and how it continues to haunt us way into adulthood—and in all likelihood, for the rest of our lives. How, then, does Washington advocate approaching this problem? Honestly, I don’t feel like I got a lot of advice here. The seven-step method presented was to me a little simplistic and nothing that I haven’t seen presented hundreds of times in some form or another, and nor was it presented so much better here as to warrant extra attention in the manner of “here’s what Washington adds to that toolboxâ€.So, what does Washington add? Certainly her personal story, presented not as a sob story but as a journey of progress—difficult and pock-marked with setbacks as it was—leaving the reader with a feeling of kinship, that one is not alone, and that there is hope, and specifically, that we must find and act on that hope in an organised fashion.
"Family is Not Everything" is a book in which the author shares her personal stories and how despite all the emotional and psychological trauma and abuse that she experienced growing up, she still managed to build a successful and happy life of her own.At a glance, the title may seem to put down the importance of family and to be honest, that made me feel a little uncomfortable. However, as I read the introduction, I was really intrigued and completely threw aside my preconceived notions about the author and the book. The book has been written so sincerely, emotionally and heartfelt. One simply cannot help but be filled with an utmost respect for the author. We cannot choose our family and before we step into adulthood, we are practically helpless if we are stuck in a cycle of abuse and neglect by our parents or even siblings. The author has not only found a way to get out of the darkness of her past, she has even come up with seven structured steps to also help other people with similar experiences. In addition, she is both qualified academically and professionally, making her absolutely credible as a counselor on this subject. This book is incredibly empowering and inspiring, especially to those who have been hurt by family members.
I got this book because I read Ms. Washington's first book and really liked it. I thought her second book would be good as well. This book blew me away. I couldn't stop reading it. She hits the nail right on the head by her examples that affect people, in general, all the time. She then provides things that we can do to help ourselves do better. I can't think of a better formula for a successful book than that. I can't wait to read her next book.
