My son loves this book. We actually saw it at Hollywood Studios at Disney World this year when we went but I was able to find it here on Amazon at less than half the cost of the Disney gift shop it was in (near the newer Star Wars meet and greet area). I'm glad I waited and got him this one. The information inside is pretty detailed and a little violent (creatures eating/slicing open other creatures) in some of the hand drawn photos but isn't too bad since its just a drawing. My son loves to read about the creatures and then try to draw them himself.

 This hardcover is actually texture-pressed with scale patterns from a creature I can't identify. It has a nice touch.This is a field guide to the wildlife from the Star Wars planets. It's organised by planets and the included ones are Tatooine, Hoth, Dagobah, Naboo, Bespin, Endor, Yavin 4 and Coruscant. There's a short introduction describing each ecosystem -- fiery, freezing, vaporous, etc.The illustrations are sketches drawn with pencils and colour markers, supposedly by a zoologist in the field, but is actually none other than Terryl Whitlatch. They are all wonderfully detailed showing the creatures in their natural habitat, be it hunting, caring for their young, chilling out, or even on sale at some market on Coruscant. The attention to skin textures is very nice. You can almost get a feel just by looking. Beautiful colours also.Besides the paintings are field notes filling in on information like feeding patterns, mating habits, herding instincts and defensive mechanisms of these fascinating beings.I didn't know that the giant space slug is really that huge at 900 metres until I looked up the size of a blue whale for comparison, which is 33 metres. The space slugs gets nutrients from asteroids and you can see how the intestines work. Some of the designs you'll see are inspired by Earth animals. The Opee Sea Killer has characteristics from lobster (shell), frog (long sticky tongue), anglerfish (that glowing forehead tip) and the arowana (breeding little babies in the mouth).Some of the designs might look a bit far fetch but hey, this is Star Wars, this is science fiction. I guess anything goes but many are believable for the most part, in art and concept.This is a very good book for all fans of Star Wars and animal art.(More pictures are available on my blog. I got this as a gift for a 7-year old girl who is a blossoming Star Wars fan who is interested in science--as far as 7-yr olds go.She LOVED this book. "What's that? Daddy what movie is that monster from. Ooooh that's neat. I remember that one."The artwork is mature enough for me (a mid-30s Dungeons and Dragons, Fantasy fan) to enjoy and straightforward enough for this young girl to enjoy.

My Son cannot put this book down and that is coming from a kid who generally doesn't like animals. I think pictures and diagrams read more like schematics to a robotic lab than a field guide which explains why he likes it. There is very technical and creative language which for the interested youth reader will help expand their vocabulary. I highly recommend the hard cover since the book gets used so much and spends much of its life in his backpack. Btw he is 11 years old.

There isn't much bad I can say about this book. It's great to see the wonderful illustrations of some of the most talked about (and never seen) creatures of Star Wars.The artwork is top notch all around with loads of new beasties from the places you know in the Star Wars universe. The book is rather large for a "field guide". I know I wouldn't be throwing this in my backpack, but the (what I'm assuming to be) dewback hide cover of the book is great. And the comparative size chart on the inside covers is great. Yep, that's a Space Slug taking up all four inside covers...Overall, if you have any interest in the creatures of SW, this book will not disappoint. Looking at it, you can tell why it's retailing for $.... It is, just simply, an outstanding book.

Got this book for my 12yr old son for Christmas and he loves the book. The drawings in the book are more artistic and stylized like a field journal would be, they are not super detailed. That said he's discovered all kinds of new beasts and creatures across the galaxy.

This is a beautiful coffee table book with lovely illustrations and is true to Star Wars.

My son loved this book because he has recently adapted an interest in the Star Wars area. This book goes through every known Star Wars creature and on top of this, it gives a detailed description of various facts about each and every creature. Aside from all of the detail and descripions, my son loved that illustrations. This book catches the mind and the eye of children!

What an amazing book! Ninety-nine photographers and 589 of their masterpieces, both black & white and color. The photographers are listed alphabetically. Each photographer's page starts with a photo of the photographer him/her self and a paragraph of biography. These have great tidbits of information. For example, Jack Birns moved to SE Asia in 1947 and became a specialist in that part of the world. Especially China, "where he captured Shanghai's poverty and social chaos, which derived from the long battle between the ruling Nationalist Party and the insurgent communists. Interestingly, Birns' Chinese images often clashed with the ardent anticommunist views of publisher Henry Luce. As a consequence, many of his pictures didn't receive a wide audience."Each photographer gets a spread of from 2 - 10 pages. The number of photos shown for each photographer ranges from 2 - 13. The photos are in all sizes, and there are many two-page spreads.Though I love reading the written word, it is so true that a picture can replace a thousand words. John Dominis' photo of a leopard faced down by a howling baboon is electrifying. Samuel Goldwyn taking his daily walk, with his chauffeur driving his Rolls Royce alongside, is hilarious. Marilyn Monroe in her "ballerina" dress, that photo will outlive you and me together.And then there's the horrors. You can read a description of a concentration camp survivor, but it's nothing as riveting as a photo. So many famous photos came out of Vietnam, you'd think we'd never go to war again.Many of the photos in this book are famous, and justly so. Everything from world news to intimate glimpses to celebrities. I'm not always a fan of celebrity photos, but sometimes they tell a story, too.Though this is a paperback, it is not a flimsy paperback. Good thing, since it's 608 pages. The covers are thick cardboard-like with a glossy finish on the outside. This makes it sturdier than a regular paperback.Highly recommended book. I have one for myself and love giving it as a gift.Happy Reader

I buy very few books, tending to get them out of the library, however when I browsed this book in a bookshop and found that the local library had no plans to purchase it, I decided to buy it.No regrets at all. This is an excellent resource for anyone wanting a collection of strong images to inspire their own photography. The book documents the 90 Life photographers and notable associated photographers along with a collection of each of their work. There is also a short biography of each photographer with their images.The book is excellent, the price is superb. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with this book. 10 stars out of 5.

I did realize how small the book was until I received it. The photographs are excellent, even iconic, and deserve a larger format.

For the few dollars I paid for a used copy of this book, I was really quite pleased with it. I was originally looking for 1 specific photo from WW2 and was pleasantly surprised by all the other wonderful photos...and there were so many! The book is really long and crammed with such a wide assortment of pics. I will eventually be using some of the more spectacular ones to frame and do artsy-type projects with.

Most mature adults have a much-deserved respect for the Life Photography that has impressed and entertained us in the past. this compilation was very well-chosen and presented. It will keep your interest for as long as you can hold the book. A magnificent experience.

i looked at the other life book - classic photos - i think it was called. it has most of the same incredible photos as this book. what i love about this book more is - more photos and profiles of the photographers who took them - insightful

As others had said and I wont parrot but .... great history of the wreck at Thaxton.Well written and fast paced. Read over the course of two days.Sometimes these regional micro histories are poorly written .... Not this one.Great job by the author.

As a native of Virginia I found this to be a well written and researched book. While the train wreck near Thaxton, Virginia has been largely forgotten, the writer brings the night to life with a wealth of information. That he was able to do so without weighing the book down with trivia speaks well to both his skill a writer and his clear fascination with the subject.

The author has a very clear writing style, easy to follow and understand. He has done an excellent job in his research, as well. The author puts a human face on the tragedy, neither embellishing nor minimalizing the event. I recommend the book and commend the author for bringing to light a little known historical incident and its effects on those involved. Railroad buffs or those just interested in a fascinating true story would find this book an excellent read.

The writer did an outstanding job of researching names, ages occupations, marriages, occupations and deaths of the passengers on the train. This is a story about evolution of the railroad systems in America.

I thought this book was very interesting. I live not far from Thaxton and didn't even know about this accident until I saw the book advertised. I learned a lot about the area in the pass history. I think this is a great book and would recommend it to others to read. Matter of fact I have 3 other family members reading it and I will donate it to the Bedford Co library. I checked with them and they didn't even know about the book either. Wonderful book!

Riveting account of a tragic incident in the 1890's. The author presents a vivid portrayal of the era, the heroism of ordinary people and the frailty of the human spirit in others. Well done, indeed, Mr. Jones!

The subject matter of the product is very sad. The author did justice to the would like at Thaxton. Great job.

I bought this book for Ms. Green's new way of interpreting the Court cards. She also has a unique keyword system for the Minor cards that is quite helpful. Throughout the book she includes tips and journal exercises that are of great use for beginners especially, however seasoned readers will find them helpful during those times when they are in a bit of a rut.

I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far it's very informative. I like it because of the easy to read text & the groupings of the cards. Ms. Green has a way of putting things that make them sound logical. It may have been written for beginners but I find a lot of information useful, & plan to make it part of my ongoing studies.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is humble, friendly, helpful, fresh, original and its approach is very down-to-earth and positive. I truly liked the definitions/key sentences that the author gives for every card. Although I already know the meanings of the cards I found these definitions really useful. An enjoying and nice book to read and to have. Very good job by the author, thank you!.

Not as informative as I wished. Quite short on information & didn't really get anything new out of this. Don't really understand all the 5-star reviews, but it might be nice when you are new to tarot.

I'm a big fan of Andrea Green so I bought her book immediately after receiving the email that it was published. I have been studying tarot for almost 10 years, and must say this was well written for all levels of tarot experience. It is a very easy read. With practice and this book you will be reading confidently for yourself and others. If you are a Marcus Katz fan you will appreciate this book.

For the price, it's not a bad book on tarot, but the lack of a definite pattern for each cards interpretation left it feeling a little sloppy. Some cards had a ton of information on them, others it left a lot to be desired.

Highly deserving of being a best seller. A lot of really useful insights. It's one thing to know a card's individual meaning, but the key to doing a successful reading is understanding the patterns of meaning in the cards that have been cast - how they relate to one another. This is easily the best value for money tarot card meanings book in my collection

Austin Troy explores the economic competitiveness of cities in the light of what he calls their urban energy metabolism, i.e., the different rates at which cities consume energy. The drivers of this urban energy metabolism are for example climate, access to water, the quality of buildings, industrial use, and transportation/urban development. Too many American cities are car-dependent, sprawling agglomerations. Think for example about Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles. In European and Asian cities, ownership of a car is far more a liability than an asset.Mr. Troy rightly warns his audience against complacency. Energy prices are not guaranteed to remain low forever. The author calls for both improving energy efficiency and developing new clean energy generation capacity. Mr. Troy usually explores the pros and cons of the different energy sources with objectivity in what he calls "interlude." However, the author is clearly too pessimistic about nuclear power, by far the leading U.S. electricity source which does not emit greenhouse gases. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently approved the Westinghouse Advanced Passive 1000 nuclear power plant design and the construction and operating license for the two-reactor Plant Vogtle expansion in Georgia. Nonetheless, Mr. Troy rightly lambastes the incoherent U.S. policy for the management, reprocessing, and/or disposal of spent fuel from commercial nuclear reactors.Mr. Troy looks at a wide variety of cities such as Bangkok, Copenhagen, Denver, Houston, London, New York, São Paulo, and Stockholm, to identify the best practices for improving a city's energy metabolism. The author comes to the conclusion that regionalism is at the heart of a coherent urban policy in the U.S. Local planning too often leads to urban inefficiencies among competing local jurisdictions, whose costs are born heavily by the U.S. federal government. Mr. Troy notes that contrary to popular perception, regionalism is not un-American. The U.S. federal government is already involved in many aspects of community building such as transportation and infrastructure funding, environmental protection, natural hazards protection, and housing policy. The author calls for a much more effective regionalism at the U.S. federal level. Think for example about a revised conceptualization and funding of federal transportation projects, locally relevant environmental policies, changes to sprawl-inducing federal housing finance and credit policies, and urban revitalization. However, U.S. local, county, regional, and state governments also have a key role to play in improving urban energy metabolism. Cities such as Baltimore, Denver, Los Angeles, and New York have taken steps to reduce their energy footprint in the names of quality of life, economic development, or energy efficiency.In summary, Mr. Troy calls for changes to how cities operate in the name of energy efficiency before the eventual advent of significantly higher energy prices.

Troy uses the concept of urban metabolism to explore the past, present, and future of communities in the US, with examples from the Americas and Europe. How do we use energy, and how can we live better with less? What urban design principles make people happier and safer, and make cities healthier and wealthier?This first edition is well structured, with interesting "interludes" on energy sources between chapters. Writing is usually engaging, sometimes list-y. Content is often compelling, sometimes questionable. Overall a worthwhile read, informative and thought provoking.

One of the few textbooks I truly enjoy reading.

This book arrived in good condition. It wasn't in perfect condition, but I wasn't expecting to receive it that way, so I'm very happy with my purchase. Also, the book itself (it's content) is great. I've enjoyed reading about how U.S. cities came to be organized the way that they are and the European (and U.S.) examples that have been offered thus far of what future cities in the U.S. could look like have been inspiring and also legitimately insightful. I'd recommend that anyone interested in learning how today's cities, particularly in relation to their transportation and fuel / energy use, evolved to what they are today and what they could potentially (and hopefully) become read this book.

I was looking for a tool to understand the relationship between energy and territories, and this book is now the basis of my framework. The reading, the chapters and the data are easy to understand.

Very Hungry City is an excellent account of the inter-relationship between urban areas and energy, and it explains the key issues that determine the energy usage of a city--its form, modes of transportation, infrastructure, climate, etc. In doing so, Very Hungry City provides an interesting (and entertaining) analysis of the potential effectiveness of many of the tools that are currently used (or proposed) to reduce urban energy consumption and to improve quality of life in cities. The author's analysis is clear and his conclusions are straightforward and thoughtful. The conclusions of Very Hungry City portray an energy picture that is more complicated and nuanced than typically found in the mainstream media. This characteristic of Very Hungry City sets it apart from much of the information (including other books) on environmental issues and makes it a valuable read for those interested in environmental issues and for the government officials and policymakers currently deciding how best to invest the tremendous amount of resources directed towards climate change, air pollution, urban congestion, etc.
