The author once prefaced Sigil's newest adventure with "Welcome to the Empire" and it couldn't have been more true. Sigil, bereft of her emotional anchor, is forced to rebuild herself in this new world and its key players while learning the more nuanced social mores of the time. For all the decades has lived and slept, her fumblings are believable and bewildering. It makes for an entertaining ride despite the warning of the series as a dark, erotic affair.I appreciate the author's fine crafting of all the male leads and how they interact and play in Sigil's life. There was none of that annoying testosterone-fueled jostling for affection that would normally derail the main storyline. While each brother was distinct, I found myself not minding so much the end result as the long-term healing of complex Sigil. Addison Cain deftly moves the plot while adding unsavory elements to Sigil that would normally be disturbing but with the finest stroke of the pen, it all makes sense and becomes the driving force of Sigil and her actions; to clarify, I'm talking about her penchant for bipedal flesh and irreverent disregard for mass-scale destruction. Though she has been reforged, it's nice to see she did not lose her wings and what makes her a compelling character. She kicks ass, takes names, and when the story concludes, there's no magical ending where she's completely healed and solved, but there is infinite hope. Sovreign, Kharl, and Tiburon also come into their own. In a terribly conflicting moment, I relished and found myself ecstatic when the titular character finally got his chance in the sun with Sigil. It took me a few evenings to process what all happened near the end and parse my feelings. I would say I am very satisfied with the turn of events and now more so than ever, look forward to what new stories the author creates in this world and others.
A cannibalistic, psychotic heroine? I know it sounds crazy and horrifying, but somehow, it works. Don't ask me how. The author is just that good. Even given her cannibalistic tendencies and psychotic acts of violence and murder, the reader still roots for Sigil, the heroine. If you haven't read the first book, Sigil, read it. For two reasons (1) you'll be lost in the second book if you don't, and (2) it's that good a series.If you like dark, gritty science fiction with--I'd say romance, but Sigil's relationships in this book are anything but romantic-- a heavy dose of dark erotica, I highly recommend this series.****Spoilers for Book 1 if you haven't read it****This series starts off with Sigil playing Sleeping Beauty. She's been in a coma-like state for almost half a century following the events in book 1, which left her with severe brain damage and emotional trauma. When she eventually wakes up, she's still grieving Que and Sovereign cares for her faithfully and extensively during this time, along with several of the Brothers. After several months she comes out of her depression stage of grief and swings straight into anger. And it isn't pretty. What she does to Sovereign, . After that, she is left primarily in the care of Lord Commander Karhl and the two develop a close relationship. Eventually, she's brought to the Capital of the Empire, and back to Sovereign's control, where everything is not as it seems.****Possible Spoilers for Book 2--I tried to be vague, but it might not be vague enough for some****But the Empire and its capital are nothing like she expects, and their zealot-like religious devotion, both to Sigil, and the Empire in general, overwhelm her and she struggles to accept her role in it and understand it. Frankly, I did too. WTF? Humans, all forcibly Converted, now revere Sovereign and Sigil as divine beings? The Empire as an expression of divine love? Conversion is horrifying on any number of levels. Having said that though, I can understand, from Sovereign's perspective, why it was necessary. I don't agree with it, but I can see why he thought it was the only way to protect his Brothers, Sigil, and their potential children. The Rebels, called Soshiia, whoa that was a twist. They should have been Sigil's allies in her fight against Sovereign's control, but aren't. And you'll never guess the reason why. I sure didn't. And Arden...I kind of feel bad for him, even though I know I shouldn't after everything he did. He really loves Sigil though, everything he did, he did out of love, twisted though it may be. And I agree with him about wanting control from Sovereign, who wouldn't want free will?The ending...I liked it except for the fact we're again left with more questions than answers. We get some answers in this book, but those answers only raise more questions. And Sigil's relationships. Can't say I really like any of them except for Tiburon and possibly Karhl. Sovereign...still don't like him. I didn't particularly like his character from Book 1 and can't say I warmed up to him in Book 2, either. He's still controlling and manipulative, and I feel like he doesn't really love Sigil, only loves the idea of her--mainly for the children she can provide.Overall, I highly recommend this series and can't wait for the next one. If you read Book 1 and liked it, you definitely need to read this one. I took off a star mainly for personal reasons (1) can't stand Sovereign and his controlling manipulative ways and (2) I wished we got a few more definitive answers. Instead, each answer revealed only snowballs into more and more questions.
I've read this book and the Irdesi series many times. I've always been impressed with Addison Cain's world-building and everything that goes into the series. There are so many levels and layers and things to dig through. I could end up talking to people about these books for hours and hours.Every time I read the books, I am struck with the differences between love and obsession and whether what Sovereign feels for Sigil is really love, just obsession, or even real at all. It's always interesting for a book to make anyone think so much about things like this, which is just one of the reasons that I love these books so much.It has been suggested that Sigil is a villain, but I don't think that she is. She's a victim. She was tortured and experimented on as a child and her creators put in a huge mix of stuff into her DNA and then others got into it and fiddled with it too, which didn't help at all. She was turned into a psychopath. When she was finally able to gain some hard-won control, she gets chased down and hounded, and then everything is ripped away from her. I think that she's a victim from the start, not that Sigil would like for me to think that about her, but everyone around her, minus one person, tries to manipulate her and control her for their own purposes, to one extent or another.I need to so much more to this story. There just isn't enough to it, not because the books aren't great or that Addison Cain hasn't packed plenty into it, but there isn't enough to it because the story isn't finished yet. And even when it's finished, I don't think that there will be enough for me. I'll still always be wondering what happens next.
