Book is great if you want to read it at home. Honestly, when an attending asks a question on rounds you dont want to look through this whole book for an answer. It is very hard to find a specific topic in the book. In a pocketbook, you should be able to find things more easily. It is quicker and more efficient in a hospital setting to look it up on your phone. Even if you find an answer in the book, they will ask you for a recent article/ source on the topic. I did like the pictures of rashes towards the end of the book though. If you really really want to give the series a try, the internal medicine one could be used for internal, family and peds.
This was only my second pocket series book, I used the pocket obstretrics and gynecology first and it was excellent. Thus, I was expecting the same from this pocket pediatrics book. Sadly, the appendix is not good at all so in a pinch on my clinicals it was useless for me to pull this out and try to find things quickly. If you have time to read it in advance and tab important, high yield subjects in advance it would be fine. However, I ended up buying the Harriet Lane Handbook and love it. If the appendix hadn't been so bad I would have rated this book 4.5 stars as it has good info (esp. for ambulatory peds) but when you don't have time to read/preview it before rotations start then you can skip it and go to the Harriet Lane Handbook in my opinion.
I am an MS3 approaching the end of 3rd year. I have used this in my peds clinic (haven't done peds hospital yet) and it is pretty helpful. It is a small book so it can't have everything, so it is not a good solo resource, but it can easily be carried in a white coat pocket or backpack. Not really good for shelves (too dense), but if you like physically having a book in clinic or rounds I would recommend any of the "POCKET" peds, surgery, medicine, etc. books.
I bought it for my practice in the emergency room. It needs an urgent re-editing. Half of the book is useless in real life. I bought it thinking in Sabatine Pocket Notebook for Internal Medicine, which is great. But this is not the same, not even close. If you are looking a book for your practice, better wait for the next edition, or buy another book. Maybe I would recommend it to study at home or medschool.
It's nice to have a quick reference book. This had great information, but it is not as good/ convenient as the internal medicine version. The organization (esp the index) is not intuitive, so it is more of a slow reference. It lacks significant child vitals (it has basics, but for peds I eexpect more details for vitals).
Nice slim size, fits nice in my pocket. Terrible index. Paper quality was average.Would i recommend this to someone in pediatrics clerkship? No. Pediatrics recall was better to carry around during rounds. Harriet lane pocketbook of pediatrics was better left at home and for residents.
This is an okay resource for pediatrics clerkship. However, its dermatology section is a wonderful idea, but they are missing some of the major things that you need. The sections are weak for outpatient, but I think on inpatient it would be a better resource. I would like to see it improved for outpatient peds clinic.
Works really well as an augment to the harriet lane handbook if you work in pediatrics. Amazon also recommend a set of laminated cards for peds which really helped me through the rotation. I carry this and those cards in my pocket for pediatric consults.
