Since I just finished reading "A Secret Encounter" this is the best time to hit me up for a review. I gave 4 stars, but realistically I think it should be 3 and a half. While the story line was a good one am I like the Amish genre, I felt the narrative was a bit simplistic. The title suggests something with more intrigue and depth, the female main character was only doing a good deed by feeding two homeless men and hiding the fact from her Mammi, or grandmother. No deep dark secret there. Another irritation was that when Joe the homeless man was accused of being a thief, she refused continually to allow him to explain. I think this could have been a really good book if the author had taken more space to enlarge upon events and develop her characters. It sort of seemed like she was skimming over the top. Nevertheless, I can't say I would not recommend this book, though I will say more effort put into it would have improved a great deal.
Wow. I loved this story! I was drawn into the story on the first pages and finished it the same day. Actually, I almost rejected this book because I've come to realize, in shock, after learning about some statistics, that so many Christian authors romanticize the Amish life with no thought to the high rate of sexual abuse in it (due to a male dominated society and isolated women). I was never going to read another romanticized Amish story again, but the ratings were so high, I gave it a chance. This story not only had my interest captured from the beginning, but it includes truth and lots of grace besides.I loved the compassion. This author goes on my favorite list!
New to this author and will be reading more of his books.Nice story and very heart warming to read, a Amish girl who feels sorry for some homeless men and starts leaving food for them, the storyline goes on and develops into lots of warmth and love and friendship between the two men and this girl and her grandmother -but in steps the jealous boy friend and he plots mischief, twists and turns, I can't explain more without revealing the plot.All and all I did enjoy the storyline and as stated before the author is new to me but a great writer and not to be missed
This book touched on so many real issues in today's society. The violation of Mary by her brother and the cover-up hit home with me and others I know. Forgetting that God is everywhere, all the time so He is always with us is something we are all guilty of. Just keep the faith and turn to Him in difficult times. Harvey was a prime example of this. No matter how many times and how badly he was knocked to his knees by life, turned to God and placed everything in His hands. I admired him most of all the characters in this book.
I like J.E.B. Spredemann books. You always get a complete book with interesting characters. There were two things (for me) that kept this at 4 stars.(1) Too many characters crying or tearing. It seemed in every scene someone would do one or the other if not both. After awhile it meant nothing.BUT OF A SPOILER IN (2)....(2) The protagonist male even thinking about marriage when he had no permanent job, no home and two steps from living in an alley--again.
This is an awesome story. Joe and Harvey has gone through so much and still accepted God in their life. Joe was a little lost at first ,until he met Anna. Then life was great for him towards the end of the story. It helps us to accept God in our life even when life is not so great.I love happy endings.
I liked the story but there were a few holes, particularly in the end. I felt like there were some unanswered questions and a few story lines that were a little far fetched. Overall, however, it was a fun read. I will read more books by this author!
I have been reading all the books I can find by this author. They are very touching and encouraging to me a sinner saved by grace. They have helped me to understand what grace really means. It has been so hard for me to accept that even though I fell in sin His love for me me never gave up on me. These books have left me in tears of gratitude for a loving Saviour and Heavenly Father.
