This book is about a Canadian athlete named Arthur Biyarslanov who, after he broke his leg during soccer practice, tried out boxing. Arthur is from Chechnya and was only three years old during the First Chechen War. He and his family had to escape from Chechnya as refugees to find a better place to live. This is a true story, and also a very exciting one. My favorite character in this book is… ARTHUR, or course! My favorite part of this book was when Arthur faced Zsolt, another boxing champion, for the first time. Will Arthur defeat Zsolt? Read the book and you’ll find out.I give the book 5 stars because it was entertaining the whole time. I recommend this book to kids who want to be athletes or boxers when they are older, and kids who like sports and exciting stories.

John Spray has written an exciting fast paced novel that is engaging and accessible for young readers. Young readers will become immersed in Arthur's narrow escape from Chechnya. The author's knowledge for Arthur's sport makes for an engrossing read. The font and design of this book is very appealing for reluctant readers. Every chapter has snapshots of Arthur on his journey to gold. The full colour glossy insert of photos is lovely too. The fonts and overall design really set this book apart. The paperback edition stands up nicely with its French flaps on the cover. A must have for every school library. A refreshing tale about a Muslim refugee who strives, succeeds and is a welcome role model for teens and tweens. We need more books like this for young North Americans!

Of particular interest is Barbados, which developed residential architecture of note, without the ephemeral character some resorts would convey. Zenith is achieved in Mustique. Design and luxury, superlative though it is, are not the chief attraction: privacy is. As private property, access could be granted or denied. Press would be banned from landing. Princess Margaret could indeed feel more sheltered and free than anywhere else in the former British Empire, including little England. Colin Tennant, Lord Glenconner reigned, and he was final authority on who could buy or rent. In that spirit, he gave Princess Margaret 10 acres as a wedding present, which she gladly accepted and upon which she built.Mr. Mallea gives us the grand tour of this largely vanished way of life-in-the-sun. But this is no mere picture book, but rather an informed guide which takes us through the architectural evolution of these island-escape destinations as well as through the social evolution of a type of vacationing (mostly winter) unique to the area and very much a 20th century creation. Today there are pricey somewhat exclusive resorts in select islands which are open for business. They attract those who can pay, the "no-class-but-money no-class," nothing else asked; a crowd quite different from the flow of friends or friends of friends who would spend some time in islands the rest of the world had probably never even heard about nor would they want us to hear about. They were not all blue-bloods, but, though moneyed de-rigueur, some were distinguished by achievement, by birth, by being friends, respectful of and themselves seeking privacy though perhaps enjoying the company of their peers at the destination. These islands, like the rest of the world, are quite different today.This is a beautiful book, good for casual browsing, but revealing its riches the closer one reads the text. There are unsuspected treasures to be found. For me, for example, supreme eloquence in a photograph of the 20th century's most notorious totally irrelevant couple: the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. They are pictured playing cards (canasta?) on a glass table, at Government House in Nassau. The former king had been appointed Governor of the Bahamas where he could do little mischief and would be out of the way from a world at war. Wallis seems totally involved in the game; her Duke, alas, has the look of pained endurance. This is just a tid-bit of the many delights to be found in Hermes Mallea's "Escape." It certainly is an escape I most heartily recommend.

This was used as a guest book/coffee table book for friends who will be married in Jamaica later this year. There are few books about Jamaica outside of Bob Marley biographies, so this was an excellent find. It was elegant and lended itself to exactly what I needed it for. Creative idea for engagement parties as well!

This is an extraordinary achievement. Not only is the book filled with beautiful photographs, but the text is a compelling narrative of the social history of the period. Hermes Mallea has written a book that is a must read for anyone that loves style, glamour and history. It is an entertaining and informative look at a unique place and time.

This beautifully designed book will easily transport you to your own "escape" in the caribbean. Filled with romantic photos from incredible photographers, its a book that will lure you to open again and again!

A beautiful book FULL of information about the design development of resort architecture and resort 'culture'. Amazing photos.

This beautifully book will take your breath away. The pages are heavy and glossy, beautifully designed with interesting historical prose to compliment the amazing photographs.I give 4-stars only because of the omission of Noël Coward's "Firefly". In its graceful modesty, "Firefly" would have added a special nuance that no other house can claim.The photographs depict a time long gone that we shall, sadly, never see again. A time when elegance was fashionable and it was fashionable to be elegant.
