The House On An Irish Hillside, by Felicity Hayes-McCoy

Review

'There is something entirely Irish about her writing: fresh, daring, curious and blazingly beautiful. Whatever she turns her bright eye on comes alive: the soft wild country of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula, old half-remembered stories, and the pattern of life in rural Ireland. As you read on you begin to believe that you own the house on the hillside, that you are part of the smoky circle of musicians, that the seaweed you spread on the earth will produce a fine crop of potatoes. Wise, funny and touching, this book is a portrait of friendships, customs and folklore of Ireland; but what stays with you is harder to catch, like smoke or running water. It is the taste of something we all once knew, ever-present if only you look for it. Completely enchanting.'―Joanna Lumley

This book describes the author’s gradual transition from London city to Irish country living as she and her husband find and remodel a traditional house in a wild and remote part of Ireland that echoes the past and enfolds memories, myths and old stories of people, places and events into everyday life. As the couple work on making their additional house meet their present needs, they become friends with their neighbors and develop new skills while creating a balance between work and play, the past and the present. Over the years both the author and her husband create a more satisfying life as they develop a deeper, richer relationship with a very specific place and community. This is a gentle, careful, and unassuming account of finding a simple, unique and fulfilling lifestyle that is its own reward. The author writes beautifully, crafting several prose passages that are to be savored if not committed to memory. Her descriptions of landscape and place are fresh and evocative. Her knowledge of Celtic history, myth and folklore is extensive and artfully woven through her experience. This is a lovely book.

A friend gave me this book after I had raved about my experience in Ireland, and one evening I sat down immersed in the well-written adventure of the author as if she and I were good companions. She finds her space on the coast and I went along with her. How her huband and her interacted with neighbors, new- found friends and relatives, both in London and in Ireland, were such delightful takes of what life is all about.Right from the first paragraph I knew that I would be in for a marvelous read thanks to the author's ability with language and her careful descriptions.

Nice but lukewarm story with uninspired writing. The author never really gets to the heart of the appeal of her giant change of lifestyle to this house from her previous urban life. I enjoyed the small glimpses into the local Irish folk, but it seemed to lack depth. It would have been good to really FEEL through her eyes and her heart, instead of getting a more journalistic report of parties attended and tasks done to the house. I think the true core of this story was skipped over, somehow, as it left me strangely dissatisfying sense of "something was missed."

This beautiful story stirred up longings for times I've never experienced, A masterpiece of landscapes, turf fires, cooking and baking aromas, families and communities forged from proximity and caring are wrapped in sounds of music and dancing and camaraderie as real as imagination can allow.Did I dream it or has my DNA lived in Corca Dhuibuhne?

I really enjoyed this book and the tales of her neighbors. I have a lot of Irish ancestry so I found all the Irish history and mythology very interesting. I would have liked less background on their lives in London and more on transforming their home in Ireland. I think the contrast of their lifestyles London versus Ireland was interesting but a bit too heavy on the London side. The neighbors' names became too many to remember so I stopped trying and just enjoyed their roles. I recommend this book for anyone looking at a peek into Irish life.

The writing is beautiful, the perspectives insightful and gentle, and the depiction of Back West, Dingle captures what is quintessentially the spirit of the Celtic people. I love the palpable power of place I experience in Ireland. This book captures it better than any I have read.Just 2 weeks ago, I came upon a reading/gathering led by Felicity in a Dingle bookstore. She, her husband, and neighbors were as genuine in person as in her book. They conveyed story, music, and love of place in person as she had in the book. The event was the highlight of my Dingle experience. I sent out messages that " you must read this book" to everyone I know.I savored the author's phase "memory and possibility" as I traveled throughout Ireland. Yet, one does not have to have visited Ireland to enjoy this book, It stands on its own as a story of a couple finding a place to ground themselves in beauty, community and story. In other words, I loved this book.Jeanne Crane, author of Celtic Journey, A Wee Journey to the Heart of It All.

Enjoyed it! I know how it is when you love a country you have "moved"to and then have to return to the USA (nothing against my native USA). Wish it was as easy to stay in the country we take up residence in and have the economic resources to stay there, as it is for immigrant vagrants coming in and living off the country's tax payers.

I've just returned from our first trip to Ireland, the glow remains and I want to learn more about this magical place, this wonderful book took me to an Ireland and its traditions that made me relax and soak it all in.Thank you Felicity Hayes-McCoy for the ride!

Great info, I just wish the prose was more straight forward.

Item just as described and got here quickly

Good book. Lots of information.

love it

great prices

Seemed brand new and no writing in it so far. Great read for ethnobotany class.

Book arrived in good condition.

I bought this book for a class I'm taking. The book is a bit out-of-date, but was required for the class. A new edition would be nice. I purchased the book used through Amazon, but shipped from the seller. Overall condition was decent. There were little to no markings in the text. The binding wasn't in great shape, but was good enough for the price.

If You Take a Mouse to the Movies

Amazon.com Review

Welcome to the hilariously hypothetical world of Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. Everything has an impact on everything else in this world, so if you take a mouse to the movies, don't be surprised if you find yourself being run ragged by the exuberant little fellow's increasingly grand appetites. When we first met him in Numeroff and Bond's tremendously popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, he had more energy than a 2-year-old on lollipops. Now, in the excitement of the Christmas season, he's unstoppable. Going from movie theater to Christmas tree lot to the neighbor's yard for snowmouse-building, he's a very demanding mouse indeed--in only the best way, of course. The freshness of the If You Give a... series is diminished only slightly as the sequels pile up. The dazed and earnest look on the face of the mouse's long-suffering friend makes a marvelous foil for the mouse's high-spirited expressions. Adult readers will chuckle as they recognize the ephemeral passions of a child, while children will simply love the unfolding chain of events. A perfect Christmas read-aloud for the impetuous youngster on your list. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. Following the popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (1987), If You Give a Moose a Muffin (1991), and If You Give a Pig a Pancake (1998), Numeroff offers another lively cause-and-effect romp. When a boy takes a mouse to the movies, the mouse wants popcorn, which he strings together and wants to hang on the Christmas tree that the boy buys for him. On the way home, the mouse wants to play in the snow but then needs to warm up at home, where he sings Christmas carols and wants to decorate the tree. His popcorn string is missing, so he wants to make another, which reminds him of the movies . . . As with the previous titles, children will find both the bouncy speculative text and the colorful illustrations irresistible. In simple pictures filled with wit, Bond personalizes both the story and the characters, creating the earnest boy, eager to please his gleeful, hyper mouse. A charmer that's sure to get plenty of circulation. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

We have so many of the books in this series, and my children love them. This book feels so random though. The cat goes from place to place and the book has no flow to it. I mean, they rarely were in one place longer than one page. This is the first one from the author I've been disappointed with.

There is a whole series of "If you give a" books. They are all cleverly written and funny. My 2 year old daughter loves them and laughs hysterically when I read them. I enjoy reading them too. The pages are vibrant and the illustrations are beautiful. The pages are also durable and thick which I appreciate as a mom of a tot.Overall, this is a beautiful, fun, and durable book that was well written. I recommend it. Check out "If you give a pig a pancake". (same author) That's our favorite book!

Cute story and my 2 year old wanted to read it a lot. However this version has a lot of useless extra things- really horrible songs that don’t fit the correct tune, weird extra sketches, and recipes I’m never going to try. Should have paid more attention when buying, happy with the cute story and illustrations but wish I got the normal addition without all the nonsense- would have been cheaper and saved me some headaches when trying to figure out how the song lyrics could possibly fit the tune. That being said my toddler thought it was hilarious because it was making me frustrated, so maybe that’s what they were going for? Authors should stick to writing stories!!!

My 2 1/2 year old son's previous all time favorite book was "The Best Mouse Cookie" and has been for the last 1 1/2 years. This might replace it-- at least for several months. He and I both love all the seasonal tie ins to winter, snow, Christmas, snowmen, etc. We love the mouse, his constant need to be doing something different...and the boy who sweetly goes along with everything he asks. This will be one that we won't put away with the other Christmas books-- we will keep it out year round! We had to buy it via Amazon as we saw this book at Barnes & Noble but Amazon's price was 25% better or so (and no tax) so we waited for it to come in the mail instead. Happy with this purchase and this series in general!

I never mind a used book. Books should be read by many eyes. Now, if you’re selling used books, be truthful with your audience. I was looking for this book to add to my sons library. These books are his favorite. I bought this thinking it was a used hard cover book, like it said, but was misinformed. It’s a mini book from a chick fil a kids meal. I just spend 10$ on a free toy from chic fil a..... it’s funny....but not really lol I’m just going to Barnes and noble for this book. I’m returning this toy.

Makes it that much better when my own cat is a tuxedo...This was for a birthday gift along with an Amazon gift card (Yup! A 6 year-old asking for gifts cards already). LolAs a cute added bonus, I bought a stuffed tuxedo cat to tie onto the book as a hug-a-long with the story and chose the Amazon gift card that came in a gift tin shaped like a cupcake.I'm a sticker for the details...

Having read the reviews by others who thought this book didn't flow well, I tend to agree. The flow of events isn't as seamless as in If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. But, it's still a great read, and my toddler loves it. She's a cat lover and I bought this book on this fact alone. Yes, there are some things that don't make a ton of sense in this book...but really, do many kid's books make perfect sense? She loves it and that's good enough for me. If you only have the money to get one or two If You Give Books, I'd get the others I listed above before getting this one. I think they are better stories. But, I'm not sorry I bought this one and my toddler sure loves it and that's all that matters to me.

This book is hilarious. My daughter loves it. The crazy scenarios that might happen when you give a cat a cupcake. The possibilities are absurd and we as adults know that but my daughter think they could be real. Given the fact she is five years old only but now she wants a cat herself. The illustrations are so cute and the storyline.

Well, it is a stand alone read but not so sure about the HEA. Of course, it wasn't a romance novel either. I thought it was quite interesting as it took a child born to royalty and gives a bird's eye view into what their life is really like. I'm not so sure it was a life of privilege. It is sort of sad in a way that their life is not their own but belongs to a line that determines what and how they think, live, and die.Even her own mother seemed helpless to mold and shape the life of her daughter. It was left up to a man that had his own best interest at heart. It is great that she determined early on that he would not control and rule her as well as her country. As protected and sheltered as she was, she was still a victim of other's wanting to put their own agenda first. She had no desire to marry until she saw her cousin Albert as a young adult. Then she fancied herself in love and wanted to push the idea of a marriage. It is said that Albert was not as in love with her and she was in love with him at first. However, they seemed to have made 9 children in a short period of time. The story takes you through the years she spent with Albert and several events in history. I thought it was a very interesting book and I learned a lot about the royal families and the problems they faced. I really don't think I would have wanted to trade places with any of them. To have only one life and to have to live it being dictated to by government and family would be difficult. I would definitely recommend the story if you are a history buff.I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 10/20/17

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it as an informative and relaxing read. I was actually looking for a book that talked about her entire reign however. Romantic as I am, I was wanting to see here as the whole woman to the end of her reign and it wasn’t really made clear that it was covering the more currently trendy cultural affair with her and her Prince. Yes, I love a good love story and they did well but all of those years before Albert’s death certainly impacted the woman and the Queen she ultimately became. Now I gotta go find another book. (So sad) But take a chance on it; it’s quite a good read.

Queen Victoria is the longest-standing person in the English throne after the current queen Elizabeth. Interestingly, in those days the British people were more interested in the sect of the king's or queen's spouse rather than their nationalities. A person from a different sect was not accepted in any way. Therefore, the queen had not much choice for marriage. What remained in my mind from the book:- The queen was raised under unnecessary strict discipline.- She was half German.- She married to her German cousin.- She had her first child eight months after marriage which may mean she had been together with her husband before marriage.-She had nine children.-Some of her children and grandchildren were married to people from other royal families.-Christal Palace was built with the efforts of the Quenn's husband Albert. This seemed to be his biggest achievement.I couldn't get much information about the Great Britain's acquisitions, poitical climate and technological and economic developments in this country during the Victoria era. The author had been mostly focused on the Queen's personal life.

The length of Victoria's reign contributed to complexities, many of which were beyond her control. At its beginning she was a woman of power in a society which didn't condone such. The fact that she forged a way showed her strength. The second half of her life was sadOne wonders what it could have been if Albert had grown old with her.

Great book

This book reads as though it was the result of a homework assignment for an ordinary 5th grader to write an unresearched essay about Queen Victoria. It is so superficial that it contains no insights into any aspect of the Queen or her life. In fact, it has so little to relay that it repeats nearly word-for-word much of the information already contained in a previous part of the book. It is such a disappointment to have wasted an entire hour (the time it took me to read this from cover to cover) on this inane dribble.

Although I enjoyed the historical aspect of this book, I was incredibly put off by the numerous typographical errors, leading me to question the validity of the author as a conscientious and devoted historian and put him in the class of one who is anxious to see his work in print, ignoring the necessity of quality to affirm him as a legitimate writer.

Loved this book and this subject. Well written and will continue to read this author. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Victoria's story.
