decent book. Thought it was text book size it was about 150pgs skimmed it in a few hours. Info is not much in depth but will make you ask more questions and get you deeper into things. Overall a good book would recommend for newbs.

You can't find a worse book than this.

i dont like this book. it is superficial, glossy, and not aimed at the standard needed for people who will be in the market for serious offshore planning. the book is repetitive tells you more about prices of property in off shore locales, and for technical information on 'how to' it gives the stupendous advice of "seek a tax specialist in your location". wonderful.you may be wondering why 2 stars; simply because he got off his ass and wrote something that might make him a few ££. the fact that it is a serious blip on any form of quality does not bother the author..as long as he makes his £.some may say, unfortunately, an entrepreneur in the truest, yet poorest, sense.ok i did write the above, and instead of deleting it and changing it, i would simply like to add the below as an edit. the book does what is on the title. it tells you about different tax havens. i guess it does not tell you how to go about getting into and getting the best out of these havens, but it does serve as a list and relevant living standards and costs in each place. if that's what your into, it gives you a good introduction.i feel this edit was necessary as i was looking for something a lot meatier with more information into the ins n outs of offshore planning. this books tells us everywhere to do that we need to seek professional advice. thing is not all of us, in fact not many of us have the money to seek this advice.cheers.

This is a beautifully illustrated and diverse collection of stories from many different cultures and countries. Take note that some of these stories may not be suitable for very small or sensitive children -- several of the stories are more along the lines of traditional Grimm's fairy tales (i.e. very dark!). We enjoy following along with the stories throughout the calendar year. Our family has liked this book so much that we now plan to give it to friends as birthday gifts.

The book is really cute and the boys (ages 10 and 13) love the idea that each month we have some new stories to read. Some of the themes are a bit gruesome so I don't know how appropriate the stories would be for younger children. Still, I love that each story tells its origin so you get a little insight into different cultures folk tales.

I bought this for my daughters for Christmas and although we haven't started reading it yet, I love it already. The illustrations and colors are beautiful and folky; and the book is of great quality. I can't wait to read it to them throughout the new year, and for more to come.* Also, it arrived much sooner than expected! Not sure if that will happen for others, but I was really happy to see it before Christmas!

I am so excited to read this in order next year. We are currently skipping around using it for homeschooling with our other books, but it's going to be a good reread too. Lots of fun myths from various cultures and religions.

Beautifully illustrated. I'm having a hard time not reading all the stories in one night. Perfect length for a nighttime story. Well written, simple language but also uses culturally appropriate vocabulary.

They are good history stories. My kids are 2.5 and 9 months. This is a little over their age group, but my 2.5 yr old will losten, I do like the stories and learning different stories told in different cultures regarding the months. There are about 4 stories per month, 1 a week.

Very interesting array of short stories from around the world. Some are familiar, others I've never heard before. My son really enjoys reading this together with me.

This has been a great book to read to my 7 and 9 year old. I love that there are stories from other cultures. It's a favorite in our home.

We bought this encyclopedia because my 6-year-old daughter wanted a textbook about animals. The pictures are vibrant and the factual information is presented in short sentences that don't make her bored or tired of having to read to learn. She loves it and we love reading along with her, too! We also bought DK Publishings' "Ocean: A visual encyclopedia" as well so she has her land animals and ocean animals covered.

Filled to the brim with educational, interesting and fun facts about nearly every type of creature your child would want to learn about. I read reviews on other similar books but see that this was most recommended. I see why. This is so worth buying!!!!!! My 6 year thanked me over and over again for this book!

Great animal book full of photos and info on many animals; our 6 year old grandchild thoroughly enjoys it as we read it together and find many we didn't know about; has nice summaries and quick-facts that make it a great book for her library, which is mainly animals. She has to read slowly and skip certain tougher reading, but great to grow on, identify many animals and have fun doing so. Pictures are great and portray many different varieties of most animals.

My husband and I got each of our nieces and nephews (ages 4-7) this book, and they absolutely love it! It is pretty far above their reading level, but they love the pictures and ask their parents to look things up for them.

Got this for my 10 year old as a simple reference to animals around the world. He spend two weeks looking uup new animals each day and called grampa to see what he knew about said animal.

My daughter received this for Christmas. I enjoy reading about the different animals and looking at the pictures with her. She is 3 and loves learning about the animals.

This book has been my 2-year-old's favorite for several months now, engrossing her for hours at a time. The pictures are fantastic, and the descriptions are fascinating, even for an adult. For example, we learned that apes don't have tails while most monkeys do. This will definitely grow with her!

I ordered 3 animal encyclopedias for our homeschool classroom as we are doing a couple years of Zoology curriculum. This was the one that I picked for our 8 year old daughter. The two things that I like best about this encyclopedia is the colored labels on the right side of the pages that designate "mammals", "birds", "reptiles", etc. Makes it easy for my daughter to find the animal she is looking for. I also like that every animal in the book has the scientific/Latin name underneath the name of the animal in English. The book is FULL of bright, crisp photographs and my daughters love looking through this book! My one complaint is that it is a soft back book and on the first day my daughter used it, the cover and biding pulled away from the pages :( I used some Tacky glue to reattach the spine and there have not been any problems since. It's just not as sturdy at a hard-back book.

At least the written word in this book is a mirror of the life this great, troubled, woman led, filled with the hope for a life with happiness where someone would finally truly love her and stay and the thought of it filled her with joy, as well as a woman filled with a sense of dread of getting to and waking up to another day of darkness. The beginning of this book mirrors the duality of the woman in the writing. The graphic duplication however is a little more focused on the dread of her life, the immeasurable lows and not many of the incredible highs. All in all in the end worth the read, and it is a purchase well spent.

Graphic novels can function as legitimate biographies but that is not even close to the case with this book -a series of vignettes which primarily focus on some of the more degrading and damaging moments in Billie’s life without properly offering a context for them or balancing them with some of the more joyous moments. The vignettes are instead propped up by an invasive and uninspired frame story about a journalist with a deadline trying to understand Billie’s appeal. Perhaps I’m expecting too much, since audio is not an option, but the book completely fails to give a sense of what was so infectious about Billie’s music. The art and book design are both very cool.

Billie Holliday (born Eleanora Fagan, on 7 April 1915) had teenage parents and experienced a childhood of poverty and abuse. ‘Billie Holiday’ by writer Carlos Sampayo and artist Jose Muñoz starts with an introduction charting her life by French journalist Francis Marmande. Even allowing for very poor translation his is one of the worst pieces of writing – both prolix and pretentious – that I’ve encountered.The opening sentence gives you a taste:“Let’s forget for a moment, please, since it’s unforgettable in of itself, in fact, impossible to, indelible, but try to forget her mother giving birth at the age of thirteen, her great-grandmother housed in a shack in the back of the plantation, whom the master, a handsome Irishman, would come bang at set times, and by whom, she would have seventeen children all dead except for one, Billie’s grandfather.”The French have a habit of elevating the heroes of popular culture to the pantheon of the greats, even regarding Jerry Lewis as a genius. It should therefore come as no surprise that Marmande rates ‘Lady Day’ on a par with Virginia Woolf, Carson McCullers, Marguerite Duras, Stravinsky and Mozart.It therefore comes as a considerable relief to leave the introduction behind and to move on to the book proper.Carlos Sampayo copies the central storytelling device from ‘Citizen Kane’ so that instead of newsreel reporter Jerry Thompson trying to reconstruct the life of the recently deceased Charles Foster Kane, we follow a New York newspaper reporter who is researching Holiday’s life for a piece to mark the 30th anniversary of her death.Sampayo’s text covers all the key aspects of Holiday’s harrowing life, including the prostitution, alcoholism, drug addiction, destructive relationships, and casual and overt racism, and is admirably complemented by the stark but arresting black-and-white drawings of Muñoz. Holiday’s relationship with Lester Young, her personal courage (most obvious in her championing of the song ‘Strange Fruit’) and the reminders of her vocal artistry do a little to make Holiday’s life and the book less dark and downbeat.

'Billie Holiday' by Carlos Sampayo and José Muñoz is a graphic novel about the famous jazz singer. She didn't have a picturesque life, and this book doesn't flinch from that.The book begins with an essay by Francis Marmande, a writer and journalist for Le Monde. The graphic novel has a framing story of a journalist doing a story on the 30th anniversary of Billie's death. What follows is not a complete story of her life, and it's certainly not a happy one. Billie had her own problems with drugs and men, and those are presented in an unflinching way. She was also discriminated against and faced racism in spite of her tremendous fame.The book is drawn in stark black and white. The figures come across as caricatures with garishly drawn features. The incidents here are ugly and don't serve to put Billie Holiday in the best light. She had a hard life, and this book doesn't make any excuses for that. D. T. Max was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Harvard in 1984. He has been an editor at Washington Square Press, Houghton Mifflin, and The New York Observer. For the past eight years, he has reported mostly for The New York Times Magazine. His work has also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, and Chicago Tribune. He lives outside Washington, D.C., with his wife, their two young children, and a rescued beagle named Max.

I found this book to be incredibly interesting. I teach biology and anatomy to nurses, and I've known about prion diseases for a long time. I had read before about the disease kuru in New Guinea, and about the Mad Cow outbreak in Great Britain. But reading about a family that has an inherited disease that involves prions really changes things a bit in this field. In medical school, we heard of a case where surgeons opened the skull of a patient, thinking he had Alzheimer's Dementia...only to find out the person had Crutzfeld-Jakob disease. The proper protections were not in place and other people got infected with it.Prion diseases are different, in that they are not caused by bacteria or viruses, which we have known about for over 100 years. Prions are pure protein, and we have them in our brains normally. But when diseased prions touch normal proteins, they cause the unfolding of those proteins. And this causes the misfunction of normal proteins.I feel for this family in Italy. Their condition, that plagues their family, curbs their lives. But doctors will find out a lot more about prions by observing this family. Their misfortune will add to the current medical knowledge of the world about prions.

The Family That Couldn't Sleep is a chilling documentary about prion diseases and their terrifying effects on the human brain. It's well written and researched, and the accounts are intriguing, if not rather scary. I learned quite a bit from reading it. Ironically, it also made me sleepy, so I always read it before bed....At times it's a bit didactic, but honestly it's more interesting than dry. It certainly reads better than a textbook. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in epidemiology, biology, and medical microbiology.

Through an engaging, coherent history of prions and their diseases, "The Family That Couldn't Sleep" creates an amazing informative book. Very often, it is easy to dissociate laboratories and the molecular research that is actively moving to the lives of individuals human beings. Max creates an amazing weaved book in which the cutting-edge research of the time is connected to the individual family narratives. Beyond that, we are also able to get a glimpse into the lives of brilliant researchers who were spearheading an unknown field - prion research and exploration.Like a voyage of infectious disease, prions are connected across the world - from Italy, England, Papua New Guinea to the United States. "The Family That Couldn't Sleep" provides a great introduction into the interesting history of an infectious agent. With pockets of drama in the prion research field to the personal lives of afflicted individuals to the policy movements and action that move the storyline, Max's compelling book will pique anyone's interest in infectious prions and their role across the world.

I heard about this disorder (Fatale Familia Insomnia - FFI) and had to learn more about it. Maybe macabre and grisly for some but fascinating just the same. I'm still reading it but have learned so much about medical practices as far back as the 1600's and how medical research has evolved over the centuries. And even though FFI is now exceedingly rare, there are other related diseases (ALS is one, I believe) that are called Prion diseases that have to do with defective proteins and are still somewhat of a mystery for medical research. The author has managed to write about this so the average person can understand the body's physiology and disease and make it extremely interesting. Great book for people interested in medical mysteries.

3.5 stars, really. I learned so much about prion diseases and their discovery that I went back to reread it and take notes. However, switching back and forth among storylines and diseases ended up making me a little confused, which is why I'm going back to consolidate what I learned. The subject is fascinating and valuable, and I'm glad I read this book, although it could have gone smoother. I'm convinced we need to fund more prion research.
