No matter how many times I say I'm "not that interested" in tanks, the more I study the subject, the more I find myself digging deeper into it. Being a fan of DK's books in general, I purchased this one out of curiosity and was pleasantly surprised. My copy came with prints of the M3A1 and StuG III, although I'm not sure if every copy comes with the same. For an $18 coffee table book, it's definitely a bit more in-depth than you might expect.Anyone who's purchased any of DK's other vehicle books (Train, Classic Car, Tractor, etc.) will find themselves in familiar territory. The photographs are mostly excellent, and the 15 "feature tank" spreads have some wonderfully detailed close-ups of interior and exterior features. As I've come to expect from the DK, the two and four-page spreads are attractively laid out. Although most tank references focus mainly on World War II, this book does an excellent job covering the main eras of tank development in an equitable fashion. World War I through 1939, World War II, and the Cold War to the present each receive roughly the same number of pages. Along with tanks, a surprisingly healthy chunk of this book is devoted to other kinds of armored vehicles, such as assault guns, armored cars, scout cars, and counterinsurgency vehicles. The majority of the vehicles come from the Bovington Tank Museum, so there's definitely a bit of a British bias here. Thankfully, there are plenty of vehicles from other nations, and some really obscure tanks, to balance things out. There's also an excellent reference section in the back, with explanations of different types of armor-piercing shells, suspension systems, engines, etc. work, and a handy glossary.My main disappointment is how stingy most of the individual vehicle descriptions are. Except for the 15 "feature tanks," each receives a couple sentences, along with the year they entered service, country, weight, engine, and main armament. I understand that books like this are intended as "gateway drugs" to more serious study. Considering that tanks are trade-offs between mobility, firepower, and protection, it's odd to see nothing about maximum speed, range (on road and cross-country), or armor thickness. The text will occasionally mention that a tank had "poor mobility" or was "well armored," but there's a disappointing lack of statistical data.Some moments of shallowness aside, this book is an excellent value for money and should fascinate anyone with an interest in tanks. I'm not sure if it's really "definitive," but it's definitely more fun to browse through than the stodgy military references I usually prefer to study.

Far from being "definitive", this is just a collection of photos and very brief descriptions of selected tanks with little to no detail as far as armor, armament, speed, range, etc. The photos themselves are mostly good but I don't consider one photo of a tank to be definitive. A number of tanks have been given more detailed coverage (far too few) with pictures like; a closeup of a yellow triangle that was painted on the hull, a closeup of one of the tail lights, of a brake pedal, a temperature gauge, part of a suspension spring. If all you want to do is look at photos of select tanks and random parts of some of those tanks and you really don't care about any specifications or capabilities, you might enjoy this book. It would be a good, grade-school level introductory, but for someone interested in a serious study of tanks, it's totally inadequate.

Received My copy today, and its really just what I expected. If you are looking for a good single volume on the history of armoured warfare, then look elsewhere, there is little or no narrative to be found here.If you are a technocrat, then look elsewhere, there is very little technical info given, and what is given is limited to country of origin, caliber of main armament, and vehicle weight, etc.It's certainly true that one could learn more about armoured vehicles and armoured warfare simply by surfing Wikipedia articles, but that's not to say this book is not worth getting, it is.It quite simply is a large coffe table format book, that is lavishly illustrated, with high quality color photographs and illustrations. It would be a welcome addition to any armour enthusiast's coffee table.If you are looking for information, then read Zaloga, etc. But if you want great material for your living room , then for $16 bucks, you could do far worse.P.s , The cover of My book said that 2 prints were inside, but alas , none were included.

This book has a beautiful layout with just the right mixture of narrative to image. The images are absolutely stunning and give a real sense of both the interior and exterior design of the tanks being portrayed. The two prints that come with this book are nearly worth the entire purchase price. Extremely nice side views of the Stuart Light tank and the German Stug III in 8X10 format each easily framed on the cheap and great for the man cave. This book is well thought out and it's chronological approach gives the reader a sense of how much this weapon system has evolved over its first 100 years. Great addition to your library and highly recommended. Well worth the wait.

Excellent photographic layouts of tanks of all historical periods. Great beginners book for those who just need an introduction to the subject. Like other coffee table picture books in the DK line, it is not intended to be an encyclopedia and those interested in a more thorough discussion of tanks and armored vehicles need to look elsewhere. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a casual interest in tanks, but it is not a 'must have' for serious students of the topic.

From Leonardo da Vinci to today, a history with superb illustrations and internal details for tank modellers to satisfy the discerning, that is what I say. I added it to my library of tank books and will be consulting it in current projects on Centurions, Tigers, Panthers and others in the pipeline. I am a critic of information, as a former specifier and Chief Camouflage Scientist, plus a modelmaker for over 50 years. This is one of the best. GET IT!

I love tanks and I baught this for the coffee table. It is a magnificant book to thumb threw with a lot of great pictures. It is not what I would call a referance so much as just a really great pictorial with good info in it. Well worth the money.

The author once prefaced Sigil's newest adventure with "Welcome to the Empire" and it couldn't have been more true. Sigil, bereft of her emotional anchor, is forced to rebuild herself in this new world and its key players while learning the more nuanced social mores of the time. For all the decades has lived and slept, her fumblings are believable and bewildering. It makes for an entertaining ride despite the warning of the series as a dark, erotic affair.I appreciate the author's fine crafting of all the male leads and how they interact and play in Sigil's life. There was none of that annoying testosterone-fueled jostling for affection that would normally derail the main storyline. While each brother was distinct, I found myself not minding so much the end result as the long-term healing of complex Sigil. Addison Cain deftly moves the plot while adding unsavory elements to Sigil that would normally be disturbing but with the finest stroke of the pen, it all makes sense and becomes the driving force of Sigil and her actions; to clarify, I'm talking about her penchant for bipedal flesh and irreverent disregard for mass-scale destruction. Though she has been reforged, it's nice to see she did not lose her wings and what makes her a compelling character. She kicks ass, takes names, and when the story concludes, there's no magical ending where she's completely healed and solved, but there is infinite hope. Sovreign, Kharl, and Tiburon also come into their own. In a terribly conflicting moment, I relished and found myself ecstatic when the titular character finally got his chance in the sun with Sigil. It took me a few evenings to process what all happened near the end and parse my feelings. I would say I am very satisfied with the turn of events and now more so than ever, look forward to what new stories the author creates in this world and others.

A cannibalistic, psychotic heroine? I know it sounds crazy and horrifying, but somehow, it works. Don't ask me how. The author is just that good. Even given her cannibalistic tendencies and psychotic acts of violence and murder, the reader still roots for Sigil, the heroine. If you haven't read the first book, Sigil, read it. For two reasons (1) you'll be lost in the second book if you don't, and (2) it's that good a series.If you like dark, gritty science fiction with--I'd say romance, but Sigil's relationships in this book are anything but romantic-- a heavy dose of dark erotica, I highly recommend this series.****Spoilers for Book 1 if you haven't read it****This series starts off with Sigil playing Sleeping Beauty. She's been in a coma-like state for almost half a century following the events in book 1, which left her with severe brain damage and emotional trauma. When she eventually wakes up, she's still grieving Que and Sovereign cares for her faithfully and extensively during this time, along with several of the Brothers. After several months she comes out of her depression stage of grief and swings straight into anger. And it isn't pretty. What she does to Sovereign, . After that, she is left primarily in the care of Lord Commander Karhl and the two develop a close relationship. Eventually, she's brought to the Capital of the Empire, and back to Sovereign's control, where everything is not as it seems.****Possible Spoilers for Book 2--I tried to be vague, but it might not be vague enough for some****But the Empire and its capital are nothing like she expects, and their zealot-like religious devotion, both to Sigil, and the Empire in general, overwhelm her and she struggles to accept her role in it and understand it. Frankly, I did too. WTF? Humans, all forcibly Converted, now revere Sovereign and Sigil as divine beings? The Empire as an expression of divine love? Conversion is horrifying on any number of levels. Having said that though, I can understand, from Sovereign's perspective, why it was necessary. I don't agree with it, but I can see why he thought it was the only way to protect his Brothers, Sigil, and their potential children. The Rebels, called Soshiia, whoa that was a twist. They should have been Sigil's allies in her fight against Sovereign's control, but aren't. And you'll never guess the reason why. I sure didn't. And Arden...I kind of feel bad for him, even though I know I shouldn't after everything he did. He really loves Sigil though, everything he did, he did out of love, twisted though it may be. And I agree with him about wanting control from Sovereign, who wouldn't want free will?The ending...I liked it except for the fact we're again left with more questions than answers. We get some answers in this book, but those answers only raise more questions. And Sigil's relationships. Can't say I really like any of them except for Tiburon and possibly Karhl. Sovereign...still don't like him. I didn't particularly like his character from Book 1 and can't say I warmed up to him in Book 2, either. He's still controlling and manipulative, and I feel like he doesn't really love Sigil, only loves the idea of her--mainly for the children she can provide.Overall, I highly recommend this series and can't wait for the next one. If you read Book 1 and liked it, you definitely need to read this one. I took off a star mainly for personal reasons (1) can't stand Sovereign and his controlling manipulative ways and (2) I wished we got a few more definitive answers. Instead, each answer revealed only snowballs into more and more questions.

I've read this book and the Irdesi series many times. I've always been impressed with Addison Cain's world-building and everything that goes into the series. There are so many levels and layers and things to dig through. I could end up talking to people about these books for hours and hours.Every time I read the books, I am struck with the differences between love and obsession and whether what Sovereign feels for Sigil is really love, just obsession, or even real at all. It's always interesting for a book to make anyone think so much about things like this, which is just one of the reasons that I love these books so much.It has been suggested that Sigil is a villain, but I don't think that she is. She's a victim. She was tortured and experimented on as a child and her creators put in a huge mix of stuff into her DNA and then others got into it and fiddled with it too, which didn't help at all. She was turned into a psychopath. When she was finally able to gain some hard-won control, she gets chased down and hounded, and then everything is ripped away from her. I think that she's a victim from the start, not that Sigil would like for me to think that about her, but everyone around her, minus one person, tries to manipulate her and control her for their own purposes, to one extent or another.I need to so much more to this story. There just isn't enough to it, not because the books aren't great or that Addison Cain hasn't packed plenty into it, but there isn't enough to it because the story isn't finished yet. And even when it's finished, I don't think that there will be enough for me. I'll still always be wondering what happens next.

This book is wonderful. I just bought additional copies to give to friends. I have a relative who doesn't like to read. (Imagine that!) So, I decided to create an audio book for him (it's not available in audio version). This book has lots to say about life, attitude and success. I'm a Cal State Fullerton fan, where Augie really made his mark. I'm not a huge baseball fan. It was impressive to me that Augie could take a relatively new state school with nearly no budget and develop some of the best teams in the nation year after year. After reading "Life Is Yours to Win," I understand better how he did this.I strongly recommend this book.

Coach Garrido writes an easy to understand book that has the reader's best interest in mind. The book contains various books that help the reader understand life in the eye's of a winner. I also appreciate his candor in this book as he went through the throes of failure and the various disappointments in his life.Some of the highlights include:* Love the heck out of what you are doing* "Stay in the moment" block out fears of the past and future. The NOW is what counts.* How you feel about yourself is the most important factor in your success* Realistic goals serve you. Any baseball fan will love this book. If you have even a little background knowledge of who Augie Garrido is, you already know how great of a coach he is. This book shows that and goes beyond it. Augie doesn't just sit there and talk about his life, he shows the reader how to learn from situations he's been through. He tells a lot of stories about former players and experiences that have shaped the way he sees life through the game of baseball.

Great book. Very inspirational.

This book is most definitely worth buying whether you are exploring to read it for baseball or for life. I am a college baseball player right now, and this book is helping me on and off the field. It has helped me find the joy in baseball again and has helped me become a more positive person. It is probably the best book I have ever read, but to be honest I only read sports books. Although I am not a big reader, this one was worth it! Buy it!

These cards most likely will be your second purchase in your study of written Chinese if you have previously purchased the 1st iteration of Tuttle cards. The character progression is thoughtful and gradual as the first set as you begin common words and progress to more difficult ones.The cards are made of the same high-quality card-stock that the first set was made of that doesn't wear easily; I have carried the cards around in my pocket for months with a rubber-band around them without noticeable damage to the cards.The cards do no come with a carrying case which would be beneficial to keep them organized. I found a small plastic case which fit the cards almost perfectly from another flashcard set that I had purchased; I cannot remember the name of the product as the plastic case is the only thing that has survived.I recommend a thorough study of spoken Chinese before moving on to written as it will give you a better understanding of how the words that you are learning on the cards are used in context. The example sentences are great but are not all-inclusive of the situations in which certain words can be used.A great product overall and I would highly recommend to any student of the Chinese language. The pinyin for pronunciation on these cards is for Mandarin Chinese but the meaning of many of the characters also reflects the Cantonese meaning as well (though the pinyin for that dialect is not included on this particular set of cards).Happy Studying!

These flash cards are incredibly useful for anyone interested in learning Mandarin Chinese; however, I'd particularly recommend this product to individuals looking for supplementary material for a course that they are taking or additional language support. These cards are most effective for learning to recognize and identify characters and tones used in Chinese. If you're interested in learning how to write the characters, I'd recommend instead purchasing a book published by the same company that makes these flash cards (Tuttle) called "Learning Chinese Characters."There are 5 predominate reasons that I particularly love this product:1. The cards are the size of playing cards. This makes them portable and easy to take with you wherever you go.2. There is a hole punch in every card that allows you to slide a small ring (included) around the cards. Super easy to flip through all of the cards without loosing any between couch cushions.3. Each card is laminated. You don't have to worry about bends or tears as you would with homemade paper notecards.4. The cards teach individual characters, but also include other words the same character in a different meaning. This will help you understand how Chinese is essentially a set of building blocks to develop new words.5. Cards are numbered and ordered methodically so that you will learn how to develop new words and sentences as you gradually progress without needing to backtrack.My only complaint about this product is that the English and the Pinyin translations are right next to each other on the back. When first learning Chinese, most beginners will go through the process of learning how to understand and observe English to Pinyin (plus tones), Pinyin to characters, Characters to English. In a perfect world I would have preferred that the Pinyin and English were separated on the back of the card in different corners or something so that I could quiz myself on that information.Overall I am incredibly pleased with my purchase and consider it a bargain that I could benefit so much from a language product that didn't cost me $300+.

These sets are perfect for building and confirming vocabulary at various levels of desired proficiency. We used these for my daughter who had vocabulary gaps that kept her from progressing to higher reading levels and was otherwise impossible to root out which key words were missing. Glad to finally find something with simplified characters. The only caveat was that the audio CDs do not work on any of our CD players. But the cards alone are valuable enough to make the purchase worth it.

I have only just received this kit. It is in addition to kit number one, and continues with more flash card of the next 1,500 characters for sequential learning. This second kit has everything the first kit has but it extends the lessons by an additional 1,500 words. I highly recommend this kit in conjunction with other learning aids.

I am learning Chinese & these flashcards are great! They are a very nice size to carry around, plus they have several different words listed at the bottom of the card that also use the character. They show the simplified & original character. The biggest plus for me is they show you the order in which to write the character (they only show order on the simplified character)! I would highly recommend these cards if you are learning Mandarin Chinese.Volume 2 does not repeat words from Vol. 1, but just builds a bigger vocabulary. This is very helpful as you advance in learning Mandarin Chinese.

I haven't opened them yet. I am still using Flash Cards 1. I like how they show each step when writing the letter.
