Jackson's book needs no introduction. Because it covers just about everything in classical electrodynamics with unparalled mathematical rigor, it's been the standard graduate textbook for electromagnetics. In person, the book is actually quite thin for being the bible of electromagnetics. This is because almost no exposition is given for the concepts presented in the book. Equation after equation is thrown at you relentlessly, and the entire book is organized haphazardly. Pedagogically, the book is about as bad as it gets. However, some of the expressions derived in the book can't be found elsewhere, and the brutal problems will ensure that you KNOW electromagnetism. It's a book that will make start making sense after you make it through whatever first year graduate course you take, though at that point you probably won't care (theorists excluded).

It's a reference book. It's not a textbook. It's too short, it doesn't develop anything. The only value to this textbook is that it makes you learn very hard PDE and general vector calculus theory. But it doesn't teach it at all, it just holds you accountable for it.Looking back at it after taking the course, it serves the purpose of reference book phenomenally. But that's not how I'm reviewing it, it's the standard textbook and it's arguably the worst textbook I've used. This and Peskin and Schroeder. Though I'd have to say P&S is worse(as a textbook. Again, it's brilliant for reread about the topics when you already know it, but miserable to learn from).This and P&S are by far the least self contained textbooks available to physics students. Their only value is learning the pages so you have a good reference guide for the rest of your career as a physicist.

I'm a first-year graduate student in the US, and I just used this book in a 3-months long course. Jackson is definitely fine as a reference; it probably has the information you want, once you know what you WANT to look for :)Too dense for self-study or introduction to E&M; may recommend Zangwill for that. Jackson remains a great source of problems though, and solutions can be easily found online

The book is canonical for a graduate level course on Electrodynamics. Pretty comprehensive, albeit some topics are covered in different places scattered throughout the book.This edition is reasonably well made, considering the price. The binding is sewn, so the probability of pages falling down is low. It's paperback, but I "hardcovered" mine with chipboard and cloth and it feels awesome.

For a wide eyed young grad student this text can be (Was!) quite daunting, I used the 2nd edition with the Gaussian (CGS) units. The math needed to solve the problems is presented in a haphazard way, not systematically as a mathematician should present it but just given as techniques that work with particular problems-true of the 2nd as well as the 3rd. Bad. Derivations like in Lienard-Wiechert potentials are heuristic at best. The vector potential expressed as an integral over current density divided by distance seems to follow cogently-not rigorously.. Bad. What's good? A careful reading shows the author makes no attempt at an exhaustive comprehensive treatment but usually presents a brief description which happens to be good enough sometimes and gives the reader references to the more exhaustive treatments if not. I disparagingly called this a reference book because it gave you references-not the interpretation taken by my pipe smoking, ascot wearing comrades. Well in hindsight a complete exhaustive treatment of E&M has yet to be written. It branches off to various specialties. What a grad student needs is a guide and that's what Jackson is. The teacher probably should emphasize this point. The difficulty of the problems largely stems from not interpreting the problem correctly. You have to see what's being said-maybe diagram it. Jackson for many was their first exposure to problems that couldn't be solved in closed form-series solutions. We're comfortable with this in the computer age.

In terms of difficulty and pace, reading Jackson is like reading a journal paper, or rather 200 journal papers bound together. Sometimes he skips about 20 steps and tells you it's obvious how he got to the next equation. Even my professor and TA could not explain how Jackson arrived at some of his equations.Also, some of the problems can be a bit tedious, with pages and pages of algebra.On the other hand, I did enjoy Jackson's very rigorous approach. He covers topics concisely and comprehensively.

One of the most popular books for graduate level Electrodynamics and Magnetism class.It is very difficult to follow at times, but a very thorough book. A classic text to own.Slightly tough to make it a text for independent study, more of a text to use during a graduate class.It is worth purchasing a new copy because if you're buying it you're in grad school, and you'll most likely keep this text forever.Just in case you're studying independently, most solutions to problems in the book are all online somewhere.Happy shopping! :>

There are some incredibly difficult problem sets to be found here, and I agree with a lot of graduate programs who have decided to scrap the grad E&M requirement for a Mathematical Methods course. However, the material is presented quite well and even to the point where I feel prospective autodidacts might need minimal outside assistance, provided they have a firm grasp on prerequisite materials.

This textbook helped me out a lot. I read through it from cover to cover and was satisfied with the information. The way it presented itself was much like Modern Automotive Technology, Edition 8 (GW, 2011), which is what I was looking for. I will be honest, however, I wish GW had a more up-to-date version of this text. It hardly delves into fuel injection systems, but otherwise does a good job on everything else. For instance, it clearly discusses carburetors and related components.I could go on, but i'll give you my summary:If you need a place to start or you need a solid resource/reference, this is the book for you.

Buyers, read this review before you place an order for the paperback "Instructor's Manual".The book's title leads you to believe that it is a manual but it is not. The product description on Amazon does not make this fact clear. There were other reviewers who have highlighted the same fact. I noticed those reviews only after the book arrived.This is not a textbook or a Workbook, but it contains answer keys to the questions in another book.

My teacher; Mr. Price, swears by THIS BOOK but... Every (open book) test we have - I get pretty dang annoyed because I have yet to find an EASY ANSWER out of it!!! I am very much a beginner at motorcycles & this book does an ok job at explaining things to beginners.

Bought thinking it was the text... it's not, it's the workbook. Not super useful without the text, but the text is way pricey.

I was trying to find the Textbook when I ordered this and when it arrived, it was exactly that - a Workbook. It is a book to put notes in and answers to questions referring to Textbook. If this is what you are after, it is perfect. If you are like me, know that this has no information on motorcycles - it is simply a workbook.

The book is well-written and nicely illustrated. It gives a very good introduction to would-be motorcycle technicians as well as people who want to work on motorcycles as a hobby. It covers the basics of the motorcycle technology that was relevant in the year the book was published (1999). Both text and illustrations are very detailed.This is an excellent reference book to have in your collection if you work on motorcycles or are interested in the intricacies of motorcycle technology.What we really need now, is an updated revised edition with the latest technology included.

"They wanted it; they got it; and they liked it."In 1952, American journalist Milton Mayer moved his family to Marburg, Germany, a small town near Frankfurt. There, he set about to answer the question plaguing the world since Hilter's rise in 1933: how did a modern, western democracy fall prey to Nazism? Mayer was from German decent himself and a Jew, and he decided the answer to this quandary might lie in the "little man." Mayer met with ten such men in Marburg, men who had average jobs and lived average lives. In the book, he calls them his friends. Tailor. Police officer. Baker. Schoolteacher. What Mayer discovered, and documented in his book, was the story of how fanaticism can overtake us all."[They] did not know before 1933 that Nazism was evil. They did not know between 1933 and 1945 that it was evil. And they do not know it now."Even in all the turmoil, the poverty and the destruction of the post-war period, eight of his ten friends were unapologetic about their support for National Socialism. They remembered it as the best time of their lives, the time a "little guy" like them kept a job and even have money for a vacation now and again. Most were against the war, and very sorry about the whole genocide thing (but those Jews and Gypsies really did bring it on themselves), with one going as far as to blame all the Nazi bad deeds on Himmler. Hitler was just a fine chap who had nothing to do with it. He'd looked out for the "little man."The book starts with the burning of the Marburg synagogue on Kristallnacht. One of Mayer's subjects, an elderly tailor who the author suspects lies to him, at least a little, spent three years in prison for the arson. Mayer sought to get to the root of why each of his ten friends joined the Nazi party. For some, it was a true belief, but others were so-called March Violets, latecomers to the party who joined when their victory was inevitable, and because everyone else did. For the schoolteacher, the most thoughtful and remorseful of all Mayer's subjects (and I would argue his favorite), it was a matter of keeping his job. He'd been a social democrat in another town and wanted to be above suspicion himself. But, even he admitted to enjoying the feeling of belonging and took pride in wearing the Nazi uniform."My friends wanted Germany purified. They wanted it purified of the politicians, of all the politicians. And Hitler, the pure man, the antipolitician, was the man, untainted by 'politics,' which was only a cloak for corruption."I don't know if this seems familiar to anyone else.Interestingly, although Mayer's book makes the case that any one of us can be the next crop of "little men" taken in by a charismatic leader who provides us an outlet for our frustrations, that's not what the author set out to suggest. In fact, Mayer argues that there's something unique about the German national character that turned them into Nazis. He was also profoundly concerned that the continued American occupation of Germany (as of 1954) would turn the country again into Nazis, under a new anti-communist heading. Modern readers will recognize little of what Mayer suggests is the German national character. We also know the occupation didn't turn out the way he feared, and that Germany is one of the most successful, stable and prosperous democracies in the world."Mayer's rambling final chapters are weak, less interesting than the earlier ones, and dated."The above quote is from the new afterword added to the latest re-release of the book (2017), which I highly recommend reading (I often skip such things). I'm in perfect agreement, and it made rating this book difficult, because the first 250 pages are so, so good, and the last 100 near worthless. But I suppose that's the risk you take when you read a book written 60 years ago. I do wish in the re-release the pseudonyms for the town and the ten subjects had been dropped, like with Anne Frank's diary. There's only an outside chance one of the ten is still alive and no more need to protect identities. For my review, I have chosen to call the town Mayer wrote about by it's real name, Marburg. Throughout the book, Mayer refers to it as "Kronenberg." Imagine my frustration when I tried to find that town on Google.This is the kind of book people talk about and refer to and quote but don't read. Don't be that people. Read it.

The writing style is very conversational and easy to read. Even though it was written over 50 years ago, the examples Mayer uses illustrate excellent parallels between German society and American society. It is critical of both societies, and yet still empathizes with us "little people." I think it also shows that with the right kind of circumstances, totalitarianism would have flourished in the USA as much as it did in Germany.Almost every paragraph of this book had me pause and think of an exact situation going on today. An example is a man who will not be persuaded by facts about the number of Jewish citizens in power... during this section, "alternative facts" kept flashing in my head. We are living in the same reality, just with different terms and phrases to describe this reality. It's just re-branded. Hopefully in ten years we are not being interviewed by a foreigner who wants to know "how could this happen?"

It is easy to see from this book how the German people were fooled by their then government. It is a good book to compare what we in the U.S. are dealing with today.

This book gets tedious toward the end when the author tries to analyze the German mind of the time, but it does explain why ordinary Germans were enthusiastic about Hitler. For that alone, it should be required reading. The author talked to ordinary Germans in the 1950s. Since their lives in the 50s were still worse than they had been before the war, it was easy to explain what happened. It is a cautionary tale.

I took a year of calculus in college, several decades ago. Now I need to get my calculus skills back, because my job requires it (something I never imagined would happen).I began by taking an online alegbra class--turns out that was a really good decision. I then took an online calculus course, one of the easier ones, and eventually bombed out. It moved too fast and was just too much for me.I've bought several books to try to remedy the situation, and I think this has been the best one so far. I really, really like the straightforward explanations. Maybe, if I hadn't already struggled with a caclculus course, this book wouldn't seem so straightforward to me. I can't say. But I think that, at the very least, this would serve as a great companion to a calculus course.It does not have lots of practice problems, and if you want to progress, you really need plenty of practice. So I don't think this can serve as a standalone way to learn calculus. But you could probably gain a lot by reading the various chapters of this book before reading the corresponding chapters in a more traditional, more comprehensive, more confusing calculus textbook.I'm about halfway through the book now, almost to the point where it begins coverage of integration. I have definitely deepened my familiarity with differential calculus thanks to this book. Well worth the modest purchase price.The book assumes that your algebra and trig skills are pretty much up to snuff. If they're not, you will probably not be able to get much use out of this, or any, calculus text.UPDATE: I've now read the chapter introducing integrals and I'm raising my review from four to five stars. This doesn't change the fact that this is a very limited, brief book, and probably won't make a very good standalone way to learn calculus. But the clear, simple way in which integrals are introduced is almost perfect. I could think of a few ways to improve phrasing, and provide additional examples, but by the time I had read this chapter, I really "got it" on what an integral is, and why it's so important. I can now "see" how an integral works in my mind.If you're taking a calculus course and struggling, I can't recommend this book as a secondary resource highly enough. I'm also pairing it with Schaum's 3000 Solved Problems in Calculus, as well as videos at Khan Academy, which give me lots and lots of practice. I'm moving very slowly, but I feel that, unlike when I was trying to keep up with a course, I am absorbing the concepts deeply, and so they will really stick. If I had done this before taking the course, I'm pretty sure I would be cruising easily through the course now, or maybe tackling the "challenge" problems.

This is a great text for someone who has already had Calculus or as a review text for someone who is CURRENTLY taking a Calculus course. The writing is crisp and to the point without the baloney found in many of the modern glitzy tomes. I use it often to brush up on concepts that have long faded away. My suggestion would be to use this text as review material ALONG WITH a full fledged textbook like "Technical Calculus With Analytic Geometry" by Gersting.

My son attends one of the US Service Academies... He has used this book to help crystalize what he knows and fill in a few gaps. So far he reports having "aced" all his quizzes. We have yet to see how he does on his final, but if the quizzes are any indicator, he is on the right track. He sent me a photo of his desk on which he has a place for all his "Frequently used Reference Books." The "Calculus Essentials" and other essential books "For Dummies" are stacked neatly for easy access. Apparently his room mate uses them regularly, as well. Thanks for creating these books and making the shipping so easy.

Very easy to follow. Studying Calc and Analytical Geometry (MTH-131) and this makes the subject way more approachable and easy to grasp. I'd recommend this to anyone looking at calculus as it's a night and day difference.

I was a math major and my masters is math oriented. I helped my sister-in-law when she went back to college in 1987, but haven't used calculus since. This was a great refresher so that I could help my grandkids through their high school calculus. Great, quick refresher.I will say that I also purchased The Calculus Lifesaver by Adrian Banner in hard copy. It gives me a great reference for more complicated problems. This book just got me started and The Calculus Lifesaver keeps me going.

I have downloaded a number of samples from the various Calculus books offered on Kindle, hoping to refresh my knowledge of Calculus. I took Calculus in college and did very well in it, but never understood what I was doing. That may sound strange, but I was able to conquer the abstract motions of solving problems without having a clue why and was able to get all "A"s through all of differentiation and integration problems. I wanted to finally find a book that could explain simply what all those exercise were about. This book does it nicely. None of the other Calculus books came close to explaining it in simple words with diagrams that made sense. I just wish it didn't call itself Calculus for Dummies. I don't think I am a dummy!?!

Some of the formulas are images. I had to select the image and enlarge it to read it. I recommend the hardcopy but not the Kindle version.

This book was really helpful for me. I am taking Differential Equations right now and my Calculus I and II skills had gotten rusty. If you have already taken Calc I and II then this book will help you blow through what you have already learned, quickly. I would also recommend this to anyone who has yet to take Calc I or II. This book breaks things down into simple, human terms. I bought other Calculus for Dummy books and I am sure they are good too, but this thing gets you up to speed much faster. Hope this helps.

I wish I had found this months ago - it would have likely saved a relationship that was very important to me and my now-ex-boyfriend. There is so much I want to say about this very valuable book and will add more to this review soon. I just wanted to take a minute to HIGHLY recommend this to any couple of any age, as well as any individual person of any age. Dr. Stan Tatkin's experience, research, and knowledge is essential, in my opinion, in order to redirect our social culture's "bandwagon" following of pop media, New Age philosophy, and modern therapy. While I don't have an aversion to pop media or New Age philosophy, I have become increasingly skeptical and worried over recent years with regard to the ubiquity of Love Yourself First, Individualism vs Interconnections, and the misuse of Codependency at the cost of healthy interdependence. As a former teacher, I am aware of the demands on our schools to include more and more curricula with less time and less attention from students. With that awareness, I feel THIS information NEEDS to be presented to high school students, via science (or other domain). It would be the most valuable knowledge they would carry into adulthood for establishing healthy, content relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and of course with growing a long-term romantic relationship.

I have purchased 4 sets of this CD series (3 gifs I purchased after I bought my first one) and have recommended it to many others. I wishI I had this information years ago, but glad I have it now. There are several things I learned about myself and others: how early attachment styles affect relationships, what are skills some people just don't have, how processing speed challenges a relationship, how to keep fight/disagreements short and non-threatening...Dr. Tatkin's style of teaching is easy to listen to. I have listened to this set several times now and plan to listen more. He also makes good suggestions for people who are at the first of an "in love" situation since he stresses being in love is the brain "being on a drug."

I am a fan and follower of Dr. Tatkin's research and couple's therapy approach. This set of CD's parallels and expands on information in his book, Wired for Love. His extemporaneous style of talking sometimes diverts attention from a core principle and makes it less clear, less easily understood. Since I had read his book and follow his blogs I knew where he was going and could enjoy the journey.

Excellent. My husband and I both listened to it during a long drive. He was reticent initially but then thought it was well worth listening to together. It allowed us to have some good conversations. I plan to buy it for my married children for Valentines Day.

I love this book when I was a kid and I still love it

Classic book from my childhood that I enjoy reading with my son. Beautiful illustrations a few inaccuracies as many theories have changed over the years but great father son time with this one!

I had the audiotape of this book when I was a kid (I'm now 26) and I tell you what -- sure, it may not be *entirely* accurate anymore -- as there are now EIGHT planets instead of nine, and we have things like Kupier Belt Objects and so forth... but this is easily hands-down the best book to grab a kid's attention about space. I remember it fondly... I was a bookworm when I was a kid, and this one stands out as one of the few I remember VERY clearly.

Originally purchased this wonderful book for my son when he was four years old. It taught him basic information about our solar system that I mistakenly thought he was too young to understand. The data was presented in an informative and entertaining way. The book that I purchased came with a cassette tape and he was able to read along. He read and re-read the book so many times that he wore out the binding. The story is of a young boy who is befriended by "Planetron." As I remember, Planetron, a robot, takes him on a tour of the solar system. The book is colorfully illustrated with pictures of the planets and sun. Information about each celestial body is displayed with the picture. My son is 19 years old now and recently mentioned that it is the one book he really remembers and would like to keep as a momento of his childhood.

I'm in my late 20s now and working in engineering. I spent a few years working in telescope software and have always had an interest in astronomy. I attribute that interest half to my 5th grade science teacher, and half to this book. I may not even be an engineer today if not for the scientific interest imparted by this book.It's that influential. The audiotape version is a must. I think I may buy a copy just to hold for my eventual children.
