I figured it was only $6 for 80 pages (actually, turns out was only 64 pages in my ebook. When you paid $6, that's disappointment #1 - and this is hardly a "book," it's a single, booklet, white paper, whatever.) I'd not write this review if I only paid a dollar. It's a pretty net-negative review after buying and reading this last night and is simply my honest opinion/experience. I think the author is capable of adding a lot more value because of his reputation and other good contributions online.Quickly tiresome is combative language describing all the bad guys out there. A little goes a long way, and I appreciate that yes, there are too many of them. But the negativity is so pervasive it feels immature - after several times of these descriptions and many more to come, it becomes the feeling you get when somebody insecure it putting down others so male themselves seem smarter. Ugh.Many of the paragraphs simply didn't flow together; like a collection of thoughts strung together to sound really intelligent but actually isn't anything more than veneer.Yet as I read the book I maintained hope of a silver lining because after all, it's the "science", design and engineering (power word, show me more) of contagious ideas. All the right words, bravo. I see the book focuses on 3 sections: Exposure, Attention, and Motivation and am excited about some solid, sink my teeth in strategies that I can follow. Nothing of the sort was in this book.Why are there no solid, sink-your-teeth in strategies and what is there instead? The book was simply a collection of "scientific" "studies" that mostly the author conducted, loosely grouped into a few categories. I know science. The "science" in this book is simply unprofessional, flimsy and undocumented and frankly unworthy of my time (large data sets do not mean the research is superb), despite the author's emphasis of the scientific method. If I can't trust the methodology it all becomes a blur of page after page after page of charts with explanations and antedotes that I shrug at - maybe it's true, maybe it's useful, perhaps not. Starting with criticisms of charlatans, and then providing nothing academic of his own, I found it all ironic.The final let-down was at the end: "Measure your ROI" - naturally I think "great, show me HOW to measure ROI." Nope. This section is only telling me to DO measure my ROI. Well, duh. Hi freshman year of business college. In about a page of blathering about how you really should do it, the only thing that comes close to telling me HOW to do this is "Getting simple referral reports from a free analytics provider is a great first step". That's it. Wow. And then the next section whisks away to "Once you're actually measuring how much money social media activity is making you..."Helpful items were some of the "studies" that were relevant to me such as retweetable words, best times of day to email and so on, assuming they are correct.I don't mean to be overly harsh. I am confident the author knows a great deal about the subject more than me, and that I would learn a lot on his blog (in fact, I think the author could have fleshed out a full, useful book from this but simply wanted to make a quick buck - it's a bit shameful according to my worldview and I think it cheapens a person's brand.) This book simply wasn't it, and I am sad that I wasted my money on it. It did not live up to its title one bit.

Dan Zarrella's an internet marketing Guru. He's researched internet marketing and social media, and has some ideas about what makes things go viral. Some of them are encapsulated in this book.The book is very small and very short. Much of it was previously posted on Dan's web site. However a small book-shaped package is a convenient format. Dan says the bunnies on the front represent rapidly-reproducing ideas.Dan uses memetics, cites Richard Dawkins and says:"Our world is made of memes. If you've ever seen the matrix movies, You'll remember their world was composed entirely of computer code. Everything people interacted with was built from computerized instructions. Similarly, our world is made of contagious ideas. Everything made by huamns - from the chair you're sitting on, to the book you're reading - exists only because someone had the idea to invent it and that idea caught on, spreading from person to person."It's a memorable image: our world is indeed made of memes.The book is full of social media marketing tips of the type Dan posts on his blog. It's full of graphs and charts telling you what and when to tweet for the best results.There was one bit of the book which I really didn't like - where Dan defined a measure of the rate of increase of memetic infections per generation, claimed that trying for an explosive epidemic was unrealistic and then recommended using big seeds.Dan doesn't seem to think small seeds are effective. It is true that you should spend some of your marketing budget on seeding your idea. However making your idea spreadable is really very important. Dan says that when you do get a viral idea, it's just a fluke, and you shouldn't build your marketing strategy on luck. But relying on big seeds is not really correct advice in general. Pop songs may not reach every single member of the population before dying away, but they do reach many millions and that's good enough for their composers.Some do have to rely on big seeds, since they have content that requires it - but most should try and use highly-contagious memes in their marketing, for best effect.Dan advocates a science of marketing. However, few marketers do very much science, since they often don't want to publish their raw data, and they often don't trust what other marketers say. It's probably more realistic to advise marketers to cherry pick the best bits from the scientific method - such as iterating the process of performing experiments, measuring their outcomes and making changes. Maybe it's best to regard marketing as a technology - rather than a science.The book is pretty neat. It is short, readable and fun. Most readers will probably be hungry for more details, but at least this is a start.

Sadly, my previous review did not adhere to the advice I received as a child from Disney's character, Thumper the Rabbit..."if you can't say anything good about anyone, don't say anything at all." So I won't say anything at all about Guy Kawasaki's book, Enchantment.Along comes Dan Zarrella -- no overly-inflated guru, but an advisor I have admired for a while (His opening dedication shows someone skilled with weaving words). Zarrella's book identifies, what he aptly calls the Unicorns and Rainbows mentality that infect today's society.I urge you to get his little book on contagious ideas...what they are and how (if you are clever)to make them contagious. As he says, it has absolutely nothing to do with the idea being good or bad (witness poorly examined assertions and denials about Global Warming).As with any well-formed argument or observation, Zarrella's to-the-point writing is impossible to block or counter. It's like an oncoming bulldozer. No unicorns can stand in its way.Because most of us dream of the Internet dripping money into our bank accounts; this may one of the clearest guides to getting there. It cuts through all the (useless) touchy-feely advice of "make the customer your friend." I have enough friends, I want more customers.Zarrella is a guide to turning the oft-confusing power of social media to your advantage.P.S. I agree with one of the reviewer's assessment of the Domino Project...good tools, cheap.

This is a unique method to read the Book of Mormon. It is so clever, I am surprised that it wasn't done sooner. I highly recommend this book, which is a word for word directly from the Book of Mormon but formatted in an easy to read chronological order of events from beginning to end.

This book is the Book of Mormon with nothing taken out or moved around in terms of the text and flow of the content. I really like how it is chunked into Events in stead of chapters because the chapters do not always make sense. If feels like how Mormon would have put the original content together when he was compiling it. The name of the person speaking is listed on the left column and the location and date are listed in the right column so you feel like you always have the context of what you are reading. This has been a great tool for me personally and for my family. If you have children that are studying the Book of Mormon in seminary or institute, this will help them keep the context of what they are reading. I think everyone should have a copy of this format as they read the Book of Mormon!

I love the way the book is set up. It really does provide a different view to the scriptures that promotes clarity and additional insight. I'm using it while reading the Book of Mormon with my 12-year old daughter each night, and we both find it easier to comprehend in this narrative format.My only beef with these is the binding. It is very flimsy and feels like it will come off at any second. It certainly isn't meant for rigorous use. I would be willing to pay a little more for a more durable bind. I'm actually considering taking it to a print shop to cut off the spine, add coils and a more durable cover and backing.

I love the format of this book. I can't imagine reading it any other way from now on. It has changed the way I understand the scriptures. What a brilliant idea these men had. I'm recommending it to everyone I know! Thank you for the hard work and dedication to bringing this format to print. Nothing has been changed as far as the scriptures themselves. Just the format of putting the scriptures into events. Genious!

Love the approach these guys are taking with my favorite book. It's a no-brainer when you think about it, and in my teaching I have always pointed out the speaker of any given scripture block is an important part of the comprehension of it. I'm grateful they have sorted it out the way they have as sometimes I forget to notice the subtle changes in who is speaking.I think the best thing to come out of my study of this approach has been my appreciation for how much Mormon really contributed to his consolidation of the hundreds of records he had to sort through to deliver the "little" book we call the Book of Mormon. He was truly not only inspired, but a genius in his craft.

This is the very best way to gain a really clear understanding of the Book of Mormon! I have read the book many times over the last 40 years, but not until I purchased this book did all of the pieces start to fall together so clearly. In the front of the book there is "Explanation of the annotations and formatting" normally I skip over these, but this one caught my eye. It was key to helping me understand who was narrating the abridgments in which books, (who was telling the story.) It lists the books Mormon narrates and then names of the narrators of the other books.Instead of having chapters it is separated into events. This really helps in understanding what is going on, it also lists who is speaking, where and when the situation is happening. It is now so clear, it is like reading a novel. I find that I'm reading for very long periods of time because it is exciting to finally put all of the pieces together.I just purchased on for my12 year old granddaughter who is having trouble understanding the scriptures.I can't thank the authors enough for all of the time and work that they must have put into this project.

This formatting of the Book of Mormon is a complete game changer for me. It reads more like a script, which somehow works. This is the first time in my entire life of being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that I can say I’ve been able to feast on the scriptures! I mean, seriously! I looked on the website so I could write a fan letter to the Rosenvalls, but I couldn’t find an email. So, I hope if they see this they’ll know how intensely their insane amount of work has blessed my life. THANK YOU!!!!!

Reformatting the text helps me keep track of who is speaking and the setting. I don't get lost anymore when a speaker is quoting someone else--even when the quote continues for several verses. I can put the book down and quickly remember what was happening when I pick the book up again. Dividing the book into events (rather than chapters) helps me make sense of the stories and the timeline. After studying the book this way, I understand the Book of Mormon better than ever before.

I like the content. It doesn't attempt to be exhaustive, but offers a guided tour through the language. I'm using this as a refresher from the last time I tried to learn Scala, and I'm happy with the amount of detail. It's not as complete as some other books.Reading this on Kindle suffers from a number of problems. The code snippets are poorly formatted. There's a link to an image at the back of the book, but navigating back to the original location is hard. I can't access the table of contents in Kindle Cloud Reader, making navigation hard. Copy and paste appends a silly copyright notice.I'm happy I bought the book, but I wish I had bought the PDF version instead.

This is one of the best Scala books for beginners. I really enjoyed reading it and it helped me a lot to learn Scala and understand the concepts of functional programming. When I decided to learn Scala I started with the book "Functional Programming in Scala" by únar Bjarnason and Paul Chiusano but that one didn't work for me because I think that book is not written for people who are not already familiar with Scala and I think is more suitable for library developers and advanced programmers but if you are a beginner with Scala, I highly recommend to start from this book.

A very good book for picking up Scala for the first time. I've written several apps prior to reading and that helped "click" some of the topics better for me. After several chapters I would then continue coding more to really cement the new features as they were explained. Cay's writing is solid and easy to understand. I liked the examples throughout the book as well, and some of the end-chapter questions were surprisingly difficult, but useful IRL. I look forward to a 3rd edition from Cay when Dotty is GA.

It is pretty high level for beginners. I am beginner and I feel like going through the scala docs while reading this book. It is getting hard for me to understand the complex concepts without any examples in the book.

Great book on Scala especially if you already know Java. This book is concise, direct, and to the point. The coverage of type parameters was on target.

I found this book to be one of the more approachable ways to learn Scala. I keep googling things and I often find that returning back to this book for my answers is the best choice.

We really have no idea how much we rely on fossil fuels in this world. When I think of a gas shortage, I think of having to cut down on driving, but really had never thought of just how many products are petroleum based, from toothpaste to ball point pens. Our reliance on fossil fuels is terrifying, and Empty by Suzanne Weyn shows just how quickly everything can fall apart.Sage Valley is your average town full of middle class folks who work hard every day and live their lives as though nothing in the world will ever drastically change. When a global-wide oil shortage begins, however, they are in for a rude awakening. Suddenly kids are biking to school. Sports teams stop because they can't drive to the opposing schools. Gas costs $40, $60, then $90 dollars per gallon. People can't heat their homes. Medicines are in short supply. Food deliveries stop. Very quickly, people start to get desperate.Tom is your average second-string football player who only worries about his crush, head cheerleader Nicki. When the gas shortage begins, his biggest concern is not being able to drive her home. Nicki's biggest concern is having to wear her glasses because there haven't been any deliveries of her contacts to the pharmacy in a long time. Gwen has gone from the outcast to the only kid who has a warm house thanks to her brother's black market dealings. As if the gas shortage wasn't the worst problem, the climate change is finally about to get the better of them. Two enormous hurricanes from the gulf coast and the East Coast merge and make their way up the East to practically destroy everything in their "superhurricane" path. Disaster relief is virtually nonexistent in the current times, and Sage Valley is left to survive by its own devices.This is not only a story of how everything falls apart (although that is certainly in the foreground). It is also a story of how tragedy brings people together. How people in dire circumstances can become selfless. Heroes even. It is also a story of how things need to change if we are to survive. Towards the end of the story, the kids find a "Green" house that was built to be self-sustainable with low amounts of electricity, food production, and heat. Are we prepared for what is going to happen when the non-renewable resources we gobble up are gone?In the deluge of apocalyptic books these days, this is a fairly good one, especially for adolescents. It directly deals with their lives and can be an eye-opener for just how drastically their worlds can change. Sometimes it is hard for kids to understand how things truly affect them, like wars, natural disasters, etc., until they are in their backyards. This book puts the disaster in the worlds of these kids. It is also a fairly short, low-skilled book that would be perfect for younger or low-skilled students. The plus is that it isn't nearly as depressing as some of the stuff out there. Sure everything changes, but that doesn't mean it needs to be the end of the world! We can still find ways to survive, even in circumstances we never thought we would face!

I had high hopes when I picked up this book. The plot/scenario sounded interesting - no matter what side of the "green" debate one stands on, I don't think anyone can deny that oil *will* run out some day, whether it's in the near future or a few generations from now - and I've grown used to young adult books dealing with dystopian, apocalyptic or just plain disaster plots in an intelligent and decently written way.So, yes, "Empty" held a lot of promise for me. Unfortunately what it turned out to be was a book that read like a lecture aimed at ten-year-olds (or perhaps eight-year-olds), certainly not young adults - although the half-hearted attempt at romance and characters in their later teens seemed to indicate otherwise. The language and narrative style were so simplistic it was hard to get truly interested and the lecturing, the "message" came through so hard and clear that it occasionally nearly turned me off (and I'm by and large a supporter of the ideas being promoted here).That's not to say the book was *all* bad - it was a quick and at times not completely dull read, and the characters, while not exactly engaging or with a huge amount of personality, weren't off-putting. Might be a decent read for a child / pre-teen who is interested in saving the planet and life without oil, I suppose.

We used this book as a book study in my 8th grade science classroom. The book started out really great, but the huge hurricane seemed to come out of nowhere. My kids were super annoyed with the ending.

This author has shown the tragedy and hope of our depletion of nonrenwable resources. So many people disregard concerns today in terms of this situation. An excellent read for students!

Received this book in excellent brand new condition. This was purchased as required reading for my daughters science class.

This book was very interesting to read for me. I noticed many other reviews said this book is poorly written, but also that the reader did not finish the book. I will admit that in the beginning, the book is dull and lacked dialogue. Apparently, the author had never heard of the expresion"Show not tell." But as the book progressed, things started to happen and get more interesting. It was almost as if the bad author left off in the middle of the book and another better writer took over. I overall enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to anyone who is willing to bear through the first few chapters and not just give up on it.

This is a very good book but very short. This is not to say, however, that it does not make a lasting impression. This highly probably dystopian future spells out our dependency on non-renewable energy sources and makes a compelling argument for alternative energy sources. Complex, relatable, characters who develop as the book goes on. Enjoyable!

I had this book last year and lost it while I was in the middle. I just had to buy it again so I could finish it!

This is great to read if you want to learn about how people lived in the 1890's, before Amazon and Facebook. I found something amazing on every page in that regard. There is no better way to understand how someone lives than to examine what will eventually be their trash.The prices are great and the shipping is reasonable. My only disappointment is that Sears has refused to honor those prices and doesn't stock (m)any of the products anymore. They returned my order:10lb barrel of Mincemeat1 bottle of Warners Cure All to help fight Brights Disease, Lumbargo and as a Consumption preventative$20 Cast Iron stove$6 Colt pistol

An interesting peek into the past; Sears Roebuck and Company claimed to have everything that you needed in their catalogue, and they came pretty close. You can imagine people poring over this volume by the light of an oil lamp, almost as excited to order as to receive their deliveries.

I love old catalogues. I have quite a few. Oddly enough this is the most recent one I have purchased but it is the earliest. This is a reprint of a reprint. Originally reprinted in 1967, it was kindly reprinted for me, and others like me, to read - 42 or so years later.What did people wear, how did they cook, what did they cook have always fascinated me. That is why this book is great. I now know that in 1897 Arabian Mocha coffee was 35 cents a pound($8.58 in 2009 dollars), by 1902 (yes, I have that edition as well) it was 24 cents and in isn't in the 1908 catalogue (you had to send away for the quarterly grocery list.)I know the coffee was made on coal, gas or wood stoves. And probably boiled. But at least it was ground with a burr grinder. :-)By these books, and the others like them, we can see how our ancestors lived. As I said, fascinating. (I used the website [...] to do the inflation calculation.)

While not a step-by-step guide, it inadvertantly thrusts the reader into the role of a home owner of limited means in the late 1800s. You find yourself shopping, suckered in by the richly worded item desciptions and enticed by the promises of "best on the market," "guaranteed for a lifetime," and "will cure all diseases of the nervous system."Unconsciously, you create your own little shopping list and envision a home where the husband builds everything from the buggy to the bathrooms while the wife prepares all the meals and pretties herself with skin whiteners and hair lotions.I am so glad to have bought this catalogue. I use it as a writing prompt for my high school students, to encourage creative and analytical thought, and they delight in it. I implore everyone to investigate this book.

In 1897 you could order practically anything a person would need or desire for home, office or farm, guns and ammo included, through the glorious Sears catalogue. Need leather shoes? $1.75. Underwear? 37 cents. A gasoline stove to cook dinner? $15. The latest pump shotgun and a Colt Single Action Army? $30 buys both with enough leftover for ammo. Great reading for the living room or bathroom (outhouse?).

This book is a very good quality large paperback featuring crisp lettering and illustrations all the way through. I very much enjoyed the curiosities contained in the book, especially the archaic phrasing and overcooked descriptions of items. I found it amusing that the catalog states, in effect, don't be a nuisance and a waste of time by not doing your homework before purchasing products... the times have definitely changed! The range of goods sold and shipped by Sears, Roebuck, and Co., even at the end of the 19th century, is absolutely staggering! This Victorian-age wonder is "coffee-table approved" in my house.

Very nice book in very good condition for used. It is really interesting to see how the lifestyles were so different in 1897 which such focus on farming and country life. Sears was really a giant in those days.
