Before this book, print translations of these interviews were nonexistent.If you’re doing comprehensive research into the Cohen Brothers, especially how they viewed their own films at the time they were making them, then this book will be an essential tool.I used this book extensively recently when I was taking a three-month college-level seminar on the Cohen Brothers’ films. There were many times when I was able to share caveats from this book that provided significant new insights helpful to the entire class. I am pleased I purchased the book and recommend it to others in a similar academic situation.

If Emma Prince would stop writing these fascinating books I could actually get some work done! Just kidding... I thoroughly enjoy her historic romances. Eirik Hamersson, the Jarl, has entrusted one of his most trusted and respected warriors with the task of returning to the west to find a suitable settlement for members of the village of Dalgaard. Multiple winters have been extremely harsh on his people especially as relates to have sufficient food for the villagers. Eirik and Alaric had both been to Pictland previously where they went to Whitby's Abbey in Northumbria, bringing home, gold, silver, other riches and the woman slave, Laurel who becomes Eirik's wife. Now Alaric is heading a two-ship expedition. He captains one ship and his sister, Madrena, shieldmaden, is captain of the second ship. The voyage itself is uneventful. Alaric finds a place that appears to be ideal. After landing, the Vikings learn that there is a town nearby, a town with the negative experience of a raiding Viking party that killed all the villagers and burned their homes. Only those within the walls of the fortress were spared the first time but at least one person, Drostan, captain of the guard, bitterly remembers the family he lost in the first Viking encounter. He argues for a preemptive strike -- kill these new group of invading Vikings now! Fortunately, Maelcon, the chieftain, does not agree.When landing the ships, Alaric saw movement along the tree line. Not knowing for sure, who or what he has seen, he and a group of warriors set out to determine what or who he saw. This becomes his first encounter with the diminutive, beautiful Elisead, daughter of Chieftain Maelcon. Alaric is stunned to find this "forest spirit" out in the woods and he is struck by her beauty. As other crew members approach, he allows her to run away. Alaric, Runin, and Madrena.meet with the village chieftain and explain the mission Eirik has assigned but the chieftain is not convinced given the brutal actions of the first group of Vikings. The result: A hostage exchange -- Madrena is left behind with the chieftain in the fortress as a hostage and Elisead becomes a hostage in the Vikings' temporary settlement.This is a touching love story with Elisead and Alaric resisting mightily their mutual attraction. Will they succumb? Runin, husband of Madrena, Madrena in her leadership role, Olaf, a huge and mighty Viking warrior, Eyva a shieldmaden trainee under Madrena,and Drostan, all make important contributions to the telling of this wonderful story. For example, Elisead who is an artist that works with stone, has seen firsthand that her people have a narrow definition of women's role yet she realizes these Vikings are more openminded. Madrena is an equal as a warrior. She is training another to become a warrior. Elisead's artistic talents are seen asa gift from the gods. Madre!na is second in command of the expedition, highly regarded and respected.Elisead learns of and later meets Laurel, who was enthralled by Grimar in an earlier Prince book but becomes Eirik's wife who had been treated as a slave by her people at the Whitby's Abbey. Along the way though someone is sabotaging Eirik's mission. Is it feitr, a Norman slave from the first Viking raid? You will enjoy this book with its twists and turns -- the anger of Drostan, the unclear motives of Feitr, the distrust of Maelcon... .

Alaric was selected by his Jarl to go in search of land on which they can form a new settlement for their people, and he lands in Pictland near a people who have had an unfavorable run-in with some Northmen already. Alaric is tasked with persuading the Picts to allow them to settle near them and join forces against any future enemies, and while these negotiations are taking place they have traded hostages to show good faith, Alaric taking the Pict Chieftain’s daughter, Elisead, but not all would see the negotiations good forward and they are plagued by incidents of sabotage in their efforts to move forward. Great mystery element to this story! I wasn’t quite sure until near the end who was behind the attempts at sabotage. I loved the glimpses of both Viking and Pict culture in this story, and their contrast to each other. The mystical “old ways” air that surrounded Elisead fit in so well with the Vikings, and I thought that was a very intriguing aspect of her character. Alaric was such a non-judgmental, protective companion to Elisead, and I really liked the way he made her an equal and a partner. Great story!Note: This book was provided to me by the author for an honest review.

As with all of Emma Prince's books the more you get into a series the better they get. I thoroughly enjoyed this story of intrigue and romance about the settling in Scotland by the Vikings, and would recommend it to all.

Really unique plot, which was a nice change of pace! Loved it from start the finish.

I love Emma Prince's writing because there is so much story. Always lots of build-up to the characters falling in love so that when they finally do, it is so much more special. I have read all of her books so far, and I have loved each one. Anyone who enjoys romance novels should give her books a chance.

Overall enjoyable read with well thoughtout characters.

Great end to the Viking Lore trilogy! I loved Alaric's story and his little forest spirit Elisead. It's especially wonderful when a story has a little bit of pict magic thrown in. Elisead is a misunderstood red haired beauty who runs through the forests and carves what stones speak to her. When Alaric first meets her he is entranced, but there are many obstacles to overcome if he is to act on his feelings. This story is filled with action, adventure, betrayal and suspense. The beloved characters from the first two novels are also part of the tale. I thoroughly enjoyed all three of these entertaining books and would highly recommend them.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in terms of understanding the building blocks of how to value a business. Although I have worked in the financial services industry for many years, my job only recently shifted into a role that required a stronger understanding about valuation. There are a number of valuation texts out there, but what really grabbed me was the Q&A format of this one – it was very easy to understand and built up to the concepts gradually. Also, the authors did a terrific job of not just throwing a bunch of tables and charts at you; they want you to understand the logic behind each stage of the process. So, this book is a little more text heavy than most – but I actually found that to be a positive. It's like having a tutor spend extra time with you to explain the subject matter, rather than just drilling it into your memory without understanding the rationale behind the issues. Even still, this book is a lot more than just a teach-in on how discounted cash flow analysis works. There’s an entire chapter on how to bridge the valuation gap between buyers and sellers using things like earnouts and seller takeback financing. Those are topics that I haven’t seen in any other valuation texts. Although I’m not quite at that level yet, what I think is great is that I know I will be using this book as a reference for the next couple of years as understanding of valuation increases and I’m ready to go into the advanced topics. I do wish that the publisher had printed the entire valuation models at the back of the book so I could thumb through them. However, all the models are available online for free – not just as PDFs, but in Excel format so they’re interactive. This was incredibly helpful and, again, yet another feature that I had not seen in any other books. The authors also have a Twitter feed that I’ve signed up for, where they periodically post helpful M&A articles. Overall, I’m really very pleased with the purchase.

I'll start disclosing that I am not a financial professional. This is rather my hobby and I've read this book with the goal of personal development as well as to optimize my individual investment decisions. Many concepts introduced in this book were new to me. Although I've read about valuation multiples and DCF before, I didn't actually understand that this is pretty all the modern company valuation is about. The very good Appendix with the legal precedents concerning company valuation convinced me in that completely. I liked the author's language and humor. The chapter on tax implication of M&A deal structures is also a valuable reading.However, the book also has its weaknesses. Among them is that the text bears no signs of proofing (as if nobody read the manuscript after the author before publication). I mean, it contains a huge number of typos, including numbers (including in the tables). In the Kindle version, some tables are missing and under their titles, you find the tables you've already seen above. The author perfectly described in the relevant chapter that although U.S. GAAP requires that acquired assets be stepped up in financial statements and be depreciated/amortized over a period of useful life whether the deal involves purchase of stock or assets, this doesn't apply to tax basis in stock purchase deals unless the buyer makes a 338 selection; however, in the last M&A model, the author seems to forget about this and starts talking about some tax benefits from stepped-up tax basis after stock acquisition without 338 selection.

This book provides a good overview on basic M&A concepts and rationale, provides a very good foundation on deal structures and tax implications, but then falls far short on valuation and modeling. If you are looking for a book with meat and bones instructing on building comprehensive, fully integrated models, this is not the one.

i had little hope for this as I could not imagine anyone with a pedigree including the Washington Post writing anything objective but Mr. Atkinson did. This is a truly monumental effort. I've read quite a # of WWII books and they all have something to offer, and many are far superior to this as far as their story but to write a massive missive like this, well documented, with one hell of a vocabulary as well (polders?)....well, kudos to Mr. Atkinson and a moment of reverent silence to the millions of military and civilian dead who went into its writing. A few minor quibbles; there's almost nothing in there at all about Norway, nothing about the eastern front, and little about things like the Jedburgh's, but those can be filled in by other books, and for anyone wanting a comprehensive look at the war 50 years later, this is as good as I can imagine. I got a little annoyed with his treatment of patton early on, but the more I read it the more I realize it was probably pretty balanced and Patton was truly a bizarre hero. He tended to buff Mark Clark a bit, who by many other accounts was an absolutely inept soldier, and I truly enjoyed the way he introduced little known other generals - Devers, Buckner, Slim - to the reader. Also, without knowing which side of the coin he was on, he managed to get across that Montgomery was a blithering foppish fool, and that DeGaulle was perhaps the most nauseating leader in the entire morass with his timely return and idiotic and unsubstantiated demands. My own take was that Roosevelt and Eisenhower were not quite the geniuses we've been lead to believe they are, especially with some of the events that occurred in the east toward the end of the war with British and US prisoners being basically sold out to the Russians, but I was also disappointed to realize that my hero Churchill was a great leader, and a great soldier, but a bit more of a military klutz than I'd ever realized - a great leader of his nation but a meddler and perhaps the Dardanelles wasn't entirely a one off mistake on his part; he had great missteps in Italy and Western Europe as well. What came across was the gallantry and the fallibility of all of these men in various ways.But it is all in the books, and they are superbly written, with excellent gripping syntax, just enough varied style to keep you riveted, and a great balance between the battles, the logistics, the great men, and the little people who make up war history. Some of the personal recollections and personal histories were the most moving in the entire series.

In the second installment of Rick Atkinson’s ‘Liberation Trilogy’ the author takes readers on a deep dive into the gritty details of the war in the Mediterranean. Starting with the landings of Sicily in 1943 and ending on the eve of the D-Day invasion of Normandy with the seizure of Rome in June of 1944 we experience the long slog of the allied forces through Italy. Atkinson’s in depth research is deftly woven into an intriguing narrative that paints a grim picture of the campaign to exploit the Axis’ ‘soft underbelly’ as Churchill phrased it. I’m a WWII history buff but found I didn’t know as much about this fight as I thought I did until I read “The Day of Battle”. Atkinson takes you into the minds of generals and grunts alike bringing the story alive following in the footsteps of Cornelius Ryan, Stephen Ambrose, Max Hastings, and Antony Beevor. The war in Italy remains controversial and questions of its strategic value remain to this day. Certainly the allies managed to tie up large numbers of Nazi resources in a long war of attrition that might otherwise have been employed on the Eastern Front and helped to pacify Stalin until D-Day. One GI after entering Rome and experiencing the exuberant welcome from the city populace wrote: “I felt wonderfully good, generous, and important. I was a representative of strength, decency, and success.” If you want to expand your understanding about this often overlooked theater of WWII then “The Day of Battle” is an excellent book and is highly recommended.

This is the second volume in historian and journalist Rick Atkinson's "Liberation Trilogy," and it is magnificent. Rick Atkinson writes in clear, concise, and lively prose to tell the story of the United States Army's war against Nazi Germany in Sicily and Italy. That fight began in July 1943, as Allied forces followed up their victory over Germany in North Africa by invading Sicily.The battle for Sicily was relatively short and not as difficult as the later battle for Italy. Rick Atkinson does a masterful job of telling the story of the political differences between the American and British at all levels, from high government officials, to the commanding generals, to the soldiers in the field. He recounts the story of General George Patton's slapping of two soldiers, as well as the ongoing feud between Patton and British Field Marshal Montgomery.Compared to the battle for Italy, Sicily was a relatively straightforward affair. Once the Allies invaded Italy, however, German resistance stiffened to the point where the issue was very much in doubt. Some of the most memorable of Atkinson's passages in "The Day of Battle" recount the full horror of battles fought by individual soldiers. These passages are full of blood, bone, gore, mud, rain, cold, smoke and noise. They are some of the most realistic and descriptive words about war that I have ever read."The Day of Battle" is a wonderful work of history and a fascinating read. Highly recommended.

I’ve been reading Beck novels for a handful of years, ever since I discovered Black Mountain. I have t say that nothing’s changed since that day. The Fossil, a novella, is excellent! From the very beginning, I knew I’d enjoy the read. The fascination with time travel,exploration and even fixing time “anomalies” by someone’s standards, this book has you guessing and laughing along the way. It’ a non-stop kick in the balls read. Oh, I have no balls, by the way!Cheers!

Very interesting book, short, weird and action packed. Funny in a way from the different perspective of the little aliens and the defense guys. Could be a good concept for some type of temporal war between the monst and these little people... Thanks for a GoodRead.

You will never find a detective story quite like this one. Time travel ,an ancient fossil and bizarre murders all mix together in a novella you won't want to miss.

An enjoyable time travel tale with a few surprises tossed in by Beck who always writes with graphic action scenes. Looking forward to his next novel!

I enjoy reading Becks novels very much. Fossil is an interesting possibility novella.

This is a short novella, and my one complaint is that I wanted more. I so wanted this to be a full-sized book! I wanted to know more about our characters and our worlds, present, past & future!That being said, this was a lot of fun!The author manages to pack a lot into a few pages and there's a ton of action, some heartbreak, and some very interesting characters.Will happily read the author in the future!*Book downloaded via KU

The book came out yesterday and I immediately downloaded and read it last night. As usual, Greig catches the readers attention and keeps you riveted until the final paragraph. The only negative thing I can say about the book is that it is too short, it ended way too soon. He does mention Matt Kearns in the story so, hopefully, there will be a continuation story coming later.

I enjoyed reading The Fossil. Grieg Beck writes great stories. This one was no exception. It had action, humor and leprechauns.
