This slender volume (~100 pp.) provides a succinct introduction to UML (and BPMN) from the perspective of a business process modeling initiative. I see this book as having three main strengths: 1) It is non-threatening. By focusing on BPM and not attempting to be encyclopedic or unnecessarily deep, the content is kept to a manageable size for new-comers to the discipline. It can be digested and understood in a relatively short time frame. I see this as important because many potential audiences including business stakeholders are unwilling to commit to reading a huge tome. 2) Just enough UML. Although there are plenty of books that teach UML, much of what is taught is of little use to a BA -- especially an entry-level BA. The UML taught here is precisely targeted for its usefulness in performing key BA tasks. Instead of showing capabilities targeted at software developers, the approach is truly developing a Business Process Model. 3) Results oriented. This book describes how to produce an effective Business Process Model -- not just techniques, but how techniques can be used to produce something of value to the business. In my experience, there are many business problems that can be solved by following the guidelines in this boo, because a proper BPM process can clear away the cobwebs that prevent stakeholders from approaching the business with a shared understanding. In some cases documenting (or simply inventorying) business processes can stabilize business activities. Of course in many cases the process will reveal (or support a process for discussing) changes that can improve the business.My Recommendation:This is a wonderful book to give to an entry-level BA. If I ran a PMO, or a BA Center of Excellence, I would issue this book as part of an on-boarding process. It is short enough that it can be absorbed quickly. I would include a process for measuring the new recruit's absorption of the material. Follow-up with a brand-new BA would include supervised generation of BPMs within the organization. Note: this (and the book under review) does not address requirements development or requirements management, which I think is best held off on until the new-BA has reached journeyman status.For intermediate-level BAs:Some Journeyman BAs might have no experience with BPM, or perhaps picked up all they learned 'on the go', to those readers, this book's lucid presentation will put it together for them quickly. On the other hand, those comfortable with BPM would be better served by a different text which digs into esoterica and edge cases.For Sr. BAs:I don't really see how a SR BA could could have avoided BPM, however some SR BAs might be comfortable only with older notation systems (ERD, Data-flow Diagrams, & Flow charts). This book does a good job in showing how specific UML diagram types can be used for various BPM sub-processes. For those readers, this book could be much better than a general purpose book about UML (which are usually aimed at documenting software designs).

I am a business analyst working in the healthcare and pharma industries. Recently I was assigned to document a number of our business processes. I have drawn some Visio diagrams before but I was looking for a better way to do the work. A search on Amazon turned up this book by Dr. Schedlbauer. I heard him speak before at a conference and knew that he was an expert, so I decided to buy the book and see his approach.His book describes his technique called PROMAP. I found that PROMAP was a pretty good framework to get me organized and to point out that process modeling is more than just drawing Visio diagrams. I particularly liked the other types of models and his advice on how to elicit procedures from my business partners. His discussion of linking processes to rules was great - it made my business partners real happy; they could see which rules applied to their processes.The book is short and to the point, which I really like - not a lot of fluff. The book could give more examples of the diagrams and how to apply PROMAP, but overall the approach is easy to implement. We use flowcharts and UML, but not BPMN, so I did not dive deeply into the section on BPMN modeling but I expect to do that soon. The book explains UML well and we will adopt more of that going forward.Overall, I would recommend this short and to the point book to anyone whose job it is to map out business processes or who works as a business analyst.

I didn't gather much "art" from this introductory text. It also concentrates quite heavily on UML. BPMN has a very small part. I was expecting more on how UML and BPMN might interact. However, on the positive side, it's a very approachable explanation of the model elements of several different model types. Just don't expect to receive answers for difficult modeling problems.

Scarce book from BA wonderworld.

Meets expectations.

I highly recommend this book to be used as a reference guideline to develop your BPM approach. If used properly, you would be able to communicate complex business and information systems with simplicity using the models described. This is great for the novice and seasoned business analyst.

I liked this book. It provided a good foundation for me to learn BPM

I currently use this text as a 'co-text' in a course on BPM that I teach. The other text that I also use is more technical, but this provides an additional perspective and model types that make a very good compliment to more technical texts. It would earn five stars if it contained examples that the novice could walk through. I especially like the process narrative chapter. I am hoping for an updated version soon!

It is frustrating to see these so-called books that imply that they are going to tell you a cure and then of course they then tell you there is no cure. What is the point of this?

Even though not having the disease myself-I find the information in this book important.Knowledge is power after all, and avoidance of a disease is as important as curing one.Clearly the author did some serious study before writing it.

This is a joke. It leads you to believe it has a cure for herpes when it is just common knowledge info in a few short pages in large pring.

What a freakin waste of money...I already know about it, how to get it and what pharma says to take. It list a couple stupid herbs and that's it. Seriously??? All THAT info is DUH on the internet...I'm really not happy....:///

The author really did research on this Herpes subject. The book's short but it's right on the point and full of solid advices. After I read this book, I now know what herpes really is and how to protect and relief from it. I highly recommend this useful book to anyone who's looking for effective ways to cure this virus.

This past month I purchased both of the PowerPivot books that were available. The first one I got was the Professional Microsoft PowerPivot for Excel and SharePoint (wow, that was a mouthful). I would have to say that this book is geared more toward the IT Professional where it does a great job covering the installation setup on the server side, managing and troubleshooting techniques, and going over some of the development.The other part that I really like about this product was the additional insights that were provided by the product team members talking about how the product came to life and the different paths that were explored initially (originally MS Access was looked at...phew). The exercises that were provided were helpful and the troubleshooting section was very useful, especially coming from the IT side of the world. All-in-all I would highly recommend this book to the IT Pro and would give this book 5 out of 5 stars. Definitely worth the $$$.

The new free add-on for Excel 2010, PowerPivot, allows users to do more self-service BI than having to go through the time consuming process of getting database administrators to create time consuming cubes. This book does a great job of walking the reader through creating powerful BI solutions with just Excel, the free PowerPivot add-on for Excel and an understanding of your data.

Professional Microsoft PowerPivot is an excellent manual authored by key members of the Analysis Services & SQLCAT teams. With topics including introductions of the PowerPivot technology, self-service analytical construction, and server configuration & management the book provides solid content for all PowerPivot audiences. Additionally, the authors walk you thru a step-by-step exercise of building a sample PowerPivot application in parallel with progressive content. If you are serious about mastering the new self-service BI technology you should consider the manual as required reading.

Between this book and the blog they mention in the book, this was a worth the money spent. Some of raw details in the book leave something to be desired, but the troubleshooting was worth it all.If you don't already know, PowerPivot for SharePoint integration is a real bear to install and configure unless you're starting from scratch. Even then things don't go smoothly. This book had some great pointers and resolutions in the later chapter on how PowerPivot works inside the SharePoint environment and helped me figure out what services needed to be running and other details that just aren't explained elsewhere.If you're having trouble installing and configuring PowerPivot for SharePoint 2010, then this is a must have resource and reference book.

I am a fan of the Wrox Professional series of computer books because they are direct and comprehensive. This one disappointed me. It deviated from their normal "talk to you like you are a professional" format into a "hold your hand and walk you through a bunch of disjointed tasks step by step" format. If I wanted PowerPivot for dummies, I would have looked for that. Worse, the step-by-step tutorials are poorly written and missing key steps.I was very disappointed in this book.

I bought the book and read it during the weekend, even if I have worked a lot with PowerPivot I learnt some things. The printed version is weak on the PowerPivot for Excel part. It mainly goes through how to create a sample app in Excel. The part about PowerPivot for Sharepoint have more depth though. However to be fair the download page for the book has a pdf with the best DAX reference that I have seen.I would recommend people to buy and read this book.//Simon

(This is a condensed version of my full review at [...])What the book is NOT1) It is not the first book an Excel pro should pick up. It covers too much, and comes from a perspective that might seem a bit foreign. Start with Bill's book if this is your background.2) Like Bill's book, it is only a light treatment of DAX. Again, this is wise, because DAX really deserves its own book. Those seeking a detailed DAX book should look forward to an upcoming title from Marco Russo.3) It does not cover the real-world gotchas encountered in a full adoption of a PowerPivot system. After a full year of applying PowerPivot to real-world problems - six months as a product team member in exile (in Cleveland), and the last six months putting the full system into action at Pivotstream, I can say that there are a number of "gotchas" that you have to look out for in PowerPivot v1. They are not fatal - Pivotstream's PowerPivot platform is very much thriving - but you only discover them, and learn to avoid/overcome them, via real-world practice.Anyway, for a just-released product, it's not like we can expect ANY book to cover that kind of thing. There's probably room for a book like "PowerPivot in the Trenches" but someone else needs to volunteer, as I, um, rarely get out of my trench :)What the book IS - Consistently readable and info-rich1) Great Information Density, but High Readability - When I finished the book, I immediately dropped an email to Denny/Ron/Siva and told them how impressed I was with the balance between density and clarity. I purchased two wine calendars page a day type. This one has no pictures and each day has about a paragraph of writing. January 8 is National Bubble Bath Day and perhaps a good choice for the literal folks to choose Champagne, however that choice would be quickly warmed by the steam, so perhaps Pinot Noir would be better; a few pinots produces were then mentioned. I really liked the set up for travel page-a-day which actually had a pic and a bit of info and it would have been better to perhaps have had a pic of Pinot and Champagne with said info given. So far I think this is more geared towards people who like to read, rather than a quick note and an inspirational pic.

I love Paizo. I love their products. However, they need to get it together concerning their printing problems. I was ecstatic to receive the pawn box. Even though I read how there have been printing errors for some people, I held the hope that they had either been fixed by now, or that I would not be so unlucky to receive a defective product. Yet, upon opening my package, low and behold, I immediately noticed that there were pawns printed upside down, and that backs of pawns did not match.I’ve bought nearly every starfinder product out, and had planned on continuing to do so- but I feel that as a customer, I should not have to worry that every time I buy a product from Paizo I will need to check it in fear of defects. Working two jobs, I don’t have time to deal with trying to send back a defective product in return for (hopefully) a complete one. When I order the product, it should be sent correctly the first time.I love this product- but I can’t rate it well because of the defects. If it was only my product, I might reconsider. But with all of the reports flying around, this should be a message to Paizo, a plea- please work on your quality assurance, because loyal customers may not remain so forever.

Three of the sheets are printed incorrectly. The fronts and backs do not match the same characters and the back are also printed upside down. Several of the large creatures on these are printed over two medium size tokens and some of the large tokens have two medium size tokens printed over them.Outside of the three misprinted sheets the images appear to be of high quality and fairly detailed.You can see the front and back of one the sheets in the attached images.

Great set for starting a SF campaign. One page of pawns had one side printed upside down, resulting in different creatures/ships on each side of the pawn.Not a bad buy but Paizo could use a little extra quality control.

There are a lot of great Characters and monsters here that are very helpful for running a basic game. The set includes the core characters and even the 3 basic builds of the Mechanic class's Drone. Not even the Plastic miniatures has that!

Nice way to get started but it's missing some of the most basic pieces such as certain ships.

Would rate higher, as these are pretty nice, however one of the pages was misprinted and was upside down. For this I knocked off a star. Elsewise this is really handy product for Starfinder.

When i first ordered these they came very messed up. Thankfully there really wasn't a lot of hassle to get them replaced. But i just want to ask piazo to do a bit more quality assurance. Ive had two products come to me with errors so just be warned. Otherwise these are awesome products!

The first in the series, it's well written and interesting. I suspect the author isn't widely known due to the small size of the publishing house- for some reason, none of the big American houses have published any of these, which is a pity.I read little fiction, having tired of the genre many years ago, but I like Hennessy. Good story lines,interesting characters, and historically accurate. I just re-read it after an eight year haitus, and gladly it five stars.

The. Coolest. Thing!I saw someone else post how they cut the pages out and put them into page protectors. Then you write with dry erase markers and reuse. Brilliant! Super happy with this and my kiddo will love it.

I ordered this for my 4 year old son to practice writing letters. I liked that the letters were large. My son finds workbooks with smaller letters to be too difficult. I also liked that there was a whole page for each letter, to practice writing again and again, uppercase and lowercase, not just three or four of each letter. We used a plastic sheet protector (I cut one long edge off and slide it over each page) and a dry-erase marker so he can reuse the pages.

OK, I bought this and it is great but then I discovered http://www.worksheetfun.com where everything is free to download. Suddenly this book for $7 is too expensive. I would buy this book again only if I didn't have a printer at home or have no way of going to the local library to print the free downloads.

Great for helping toddlers practice writing their letters. A suggestion tho.. take the pages out and put them inside sheet protectors inside a binder and have your kids use dry erase markers so they can reuse the pages over and over again. :)

This letter tracing book was not challenging for my three year old grandchild. I watched her go through each page just tracing letters. Other books have more diversity in the tracing of the letters, also each letter is represented by more pictures for the particular letter being traced. There are no blank lines, in this book, on the pages for additional writing of the letter without tracing. There is a second half using a word starting with the letter, but that's all. If you just want tracing, fine. If you want your child to understand the letter they are tracing try a different book. Try pre-kindergarten Jumbo Workbook by Scholastic.

So from this picture our first lesson didn't go how I pictured it would in my head...but nevertheless...I like this book. I put the pages in a binder and bought dry eraser markers so we could reuse them over and over. Once my two-year-old realizes it's not a coloring book, I think it will be great. Would buy again!

OMG loved this book! It was so fun and easy. What a great way to get chidren to learn how to write. It's a great first step for anyone attempting to teach their kid (or niece/nephew, student etc) how to write. I would really recommend this for anyone. You will probably get sick of tracing but your kid definitely wont! Plenty of space to practice tracing. I found it really did help my niece write letters easier. Love it.

I love this book. I hope my 4 year old likes it as well. Other people who bought this book slides the paper in a plastic paper cover, it's exactly what I am going to do. She will definitely want to write on it if she gets to use a marker. You almost have to get plastic paper covers, how else would you PRACTICE if you've written all over it. She's new at this, so we will have plenty mistakes. This book was priced perfect, it should be affordable to teach your children simple lessons like this. It goes from single letters to words small and large. It's a wonderful gift to give OUR CHILDREN my friends. Get yourself some plastic paper covers and make mistakes. Have fun and learn while doing it. Peace
