This was going to be a gift but I liked it so much that I'm keeping it. It's all the background for the show and it's written in the same light, happy tone that the show has. Good quality materials, fun illustrations, and easy reading!

This is a fun read that gives an inside look at the Great British Baking Show. It's filled with light, funny stories like the time Mary Berry wrote her name on Paul's car, not realizing she was using a permanent marker. You'll learn what happened to some of the bakers after the show was over. It's light, no really negative gossip. However, be forewarned, there are spoilers for anybody who has not seen all the seasons.

I got this for my friends 65th birthday present, she and I talk about the show all the time. She was so excited to receive it and I just recently received a thank you note from her expressing the fun she was having reading it. I do have to admit I did take a peak before delivering it to her. The stories are great and I love the history of the show. A great read for anyone that is a fan of the show.

This gives the background of the show, the judges, and hosts, with summaries of the seasons and locations. There's a lot about the bakers -- how they're chosen, what it's like during the competition, and where many of them are now. Interestingly woven with the social media storm, and how that affected the show and the bakers. This is a fast read, and very interesting.

I was hoping for a look back at a show I love, with behind-the-scenes tidbits and glossy photos. Instead, I got a disjointed mess. That read like an audio book set on “shuffle”. In place of photos there were blurry watercolors, without names attached, plunked down at random spots. The same pictures are used over and over and are have no connection to the accompanying text.

A delightful read for fans of the show.

My aunt taught me how to crochet and she had a copy of this book, 10 minutes later I had my copy ordered. This is the Bible of crochet terms,abbreviations, stitches and has great pictures!Something that I would like to see would be left handed variations of the stitches as I am a lefty so I have to kind of work that detail out on my own.Lastly, I think what would make it the best book ever would be if it was spiral bound, but I guess I can take it to kinkos and have it done.Overall I absolutely love this book!

This has come in handy so many times I've lost count. Things are explained well and clearly. I used to crochet, but just knew a few simple things. I've relearned those and am learning a lot of new and interesting, fun, and pretty stuff. I used one of the simple patterns to make a scarf for my mom that looks great. I'd never guess it was simple seeing it on her, and she loves it. I highly recommend this book for beginners and those relearning the craft like me.

I probably fell more into the Princess culture when I got older than when I was a young girl. I'm also not the biggest fan of poetry so I was surprised by how much I liked this book and the poems and pictures inside.The book wraps up very modern things girls and women today deal with in the fairy tale myth. Like most fairy tales the subjects of the poems are fairly universal in women's lives. But they cast a dark and twisted light. The poems deal with eating disorders, body image, sex, Feminism, self-hate and so on. The poems that spoke to me the most dealt with the harsh beauty culture (I will buy every beauty magazine on the rack and I will buy pretty much anything from Sephora) and also a lack of self-confidence and how women are often harder and harsher critiques of other women including our so-called best friends. The pictures are a nice addition especially the ones that are geared more toward the fairy tale element in the poems.All in all I didn't connect with all the poems but there's something in here for everyone. I would keep it to middle school or high school aged girls though if you're thinking about getting it for someone younger. Some of the poems and pictures might be a little too intense or scary for very young girls.

The poems are really thought provoking and relatable. I loved reading this for my English course in college, and it sparked a lot of discussions. Buy this book and share it with your mother, your sister, your daughter. Use it as a feminist tool to delve into idea of self and what it means to be confident and feminist. Or just have a fun read!

I love every poem in this book. The cover is pretty awesome, too. Never heard of this author before, but she certainly shares my appreciation for the original fairy tales and their true meaning.

I did enjoy parts of this. The pictures moved me more than the poems though. I didn't realize a huge part of this would be about the author's struggle with anorexia. Which is fine; it's just not what I was expecting. Once again it's not fully developed, truly soul touching poetry. I'm still waiting...

I didn't love it as much as I would have hoped. Probably just not my style, but it was a quick and interesting read.

I liked this book. It's a different way to look at old fairytale characters. It's filled with vivid and whimsical imagery.

These poems were so dark, I loved them! Heavy on eating disorders, I wish the content was a little bit more varied besides just that. Still, absolutely amazing and heart breaking

When it says poems for you, I don't quite think the title means me. I'm decently past high school worries, which seem to be the focus.

Thanks to my various Christian relatives, friends, books and TV shows, I have been exposed to quite a number of theories about the anti-Christ and the end times. Some were more credible than others.However, after reading Richardson's The Islamic Anti-Christ, I'm stunned at how narrowly culture-bound my viewpoint was. As he points out, the Bible isn't a western European/American story; it's a Middle Eastern story.There I was, seeing the anti-Christ striding around the United Nations in a beautifully tailored suit, with European parentage...and totally ignorant of the fact that over a billion Muslims have their own idea of who the anti-Christ is, and that they are ready to follow him as soon as he appears. Or than Islam has an extensive description of him, and of what he will do, that reads just like the book of Revelation - in reverse.Yes, Muslims believe in Jesus. And that he will return. And that when he does, he will slaughter all the Jews and Christians who fail to convert to Islam! In the Muslim view, Jesus is not the prime player, he is the sidekick of the Mahdi, the new Caliph (or total ruler of the world, uniting the political and religious spheres in a single authority).Richardson isn't speculating here. He quotes from Muslim sources that have been written and accepted as authoritative for many centuries. The Sunni and Shia versions differ only in details; the basic story is the same.Does that mean that the anti-Christ will be Islamic? No. But given the billion or so Muslims in the world; their current movements into all the countries in the world; the astonishing penetration of their influence (Florida just barely managed to pass a law that said the courts could not use Sharia law in making decisions); and that of all the world religions, Islam is the only one in which the powers of the state and of religion are supposed to be united in a single person (the Caliph), and their millennia and a half lethal hatred of Christians, an Islamic anti-Christ certainly makes the most credible candidate.Now, looking only at western-oriented theories just looks ignorant. Having been among the totally ignorant myself (the role of the Islamic Jesus NEVER gets discussed in western media), I felt both silly and enlightened after reading this book. I don't think it's possible to have an intelligent discussion on the subject without it.

Most people don't know what the Qur'an says about Jesus. Most people don't know that Muslims base their beliefs not only on the Qur'an, but also on the Sunna. Richardson writes, "The Sunna interprets the Qur'an. Without the Sunna, the Qur'an cannot be properly understood. In fact, many aspects and practices of the Islamic religion are not even mentioned in the Qur'an but are found only in the Sunna." Hadith literature, the sayings of Muhammad, is part of the Sunna. Richardson says that most of Islamic beliefs about the end times are based on hadith literature.Richardson says, "The rising of the Mahdi is to the majority of Muslims what the return of Jesus is to Christians...tradition states that the Mahdi will descend from the family of Muhammad and will bear Muhammad's name." They believe that Jerusalem will serve as the location of the Mahdi's rule over the earth. "Islamic tradition pictures the Mahdi as joining the army of Muslim warriors carrying black flags. The Mahdi will lead this army to Jerusalem and re-conquer it for Islam. The Muslims will slaughter Jews until very few remain." The Mahdi is a man, not a supernatural being. He is predicted to rule for seven years, then die.There are huge differences between the Bible Jesus and the Qur'an Jesus. Muslims do not believe that Jesus died on the cross for the sins of humanity. They believe that Allah miraculously delivered Jesus from death and took Him alive to heaven.Muslims believe that when Jesus returns, He will return as a radical Muslim. They believe He will return by descending from heaven somewhere near Damascus after the Mahdi is already on the scene. Jesus will be inferior in rank to the Mahdi. Jesus will make a pilgrimage to Mecca. He will convert many people to Islam and abolish Christianity. Another of Jesus's tasks will be to kill the Muslim Antichrist known as Dajjal and all of Dajjal's followers, of whom most will be Jews.In Islam, after Jesus helps the Mahdi convert the whole world to Islam, He is prophesied to marry, have children, and die nineteen years after marrying."The texts and scholars of Islam teach that all Muslims must strive for global domination at all times, not just wait idly by for the Mahdi and the Muslim Jesus to accomplish it for them.""When Jesus says [in John 16:2] that the day is coming 'when those who murder you will think that they are offering God a service,' it necessitates not only a belief in God but also some sort of religious system whereby the mentality is that killing in the name of God is actually reasonable."Islam is now the fastest growing religion in the world. When you understand Islam as the religion of the AntiChrist, you read the end-time prophecies with a new set of eyes. God said, "My people perish for lack of knowledge". Satan has done a good job of keeping people looking at a wrong 'final kingdom', thus masking what he was and will be doing in the coming days.Bravo to Joel Richardson for taking the heat and unmasking the end times prophecies.

I just took the GRE (scored a 311) and this book was essential to performing well. It’s a good place to start with for studying the GRE to get an idea of what you need to do in order to study and improve your score. I recommend this book or another form of a general guide book that suits you, ETS material- especially practicing with their two free practice tests, and magoosh videos/website to help supplement.I found the Princeton Quant to be a little easier than the actual GRE so it’s important you do the free ETS practice tests and practice Quant (found in their math guide). The free ETS math guide I would also recommend to read for not only practice in Quant but also to touch on areas not fully covered in this book such as parabolas and trapezoids (although these are a low yield questions in the Quant section I think). Occasionally practice doing 20 quant questions in 35 min to mimic the test and to get used to working at a fast pace. I also used two pieces of computer paper to write down all the math formulas, triangle related concepts, and general math rules I needed to know to perform well and reviewed it often.I would recommend practicing writing the essays a few times, but overall this book will help you feel confident in attacking and approaching any essay given.For vocab, I solely studied from this book. I would go through their vocab page and memorize all the words. If some words gave me trouble I would cut a notecard into fours and make flash cards. This not only saved time (by making cards only for my “problem” words), but also helped to cement the words into my mind. Do not delay in studying for vocab. Study a little every day (about 10-20 words, depending on what you can handle). Don’t cram it all at once, in fact you can’t because it’s really not possible. And make sure you review old words you previously studied.For reading comprehension just practice reading those lengthy hard passages, and practice with the text completion and comparisons. Practice makes perfect and will help you master the ability to make educated guesses as well.I recommend at least doing 3-4 full practice tests before your GRE to gauge your process. Do the two ETS and two from Princeton (I found Princeton tests to be a little easier overall but still great practice). It’s important to build stamina for taking this long test. BUT do not take practice tests less than a week before your exam. You will freak yourself out and also start to burn out. Also do not study the day before or day of your exam. You did what you needed to do!Good luck! I recommend this book and hope this review helps you.

I bought this book as a gift. However I used it 15 years ago when I took the GRE. I learned about the guide from my roommate when I was an extern at Cornell. I’m not the best test taker but I know the material. My scores significantly after using this book. I got into professional school.

I used this book mostly for the verbal and writing sections as I had a separate book solely devoted to quant. I did skim through the quant section though and it wasn't that thorough so I wouldn't recommend it for that. The strategies suggested in all the sections were good though. And I loved that they had lists of the most common vocab used. This makes studying vocab much more manageable and less overwhelming. The writing sections especially helped me. I'd say this book is a good general GRE prep book, maybe to get you started, but I wouldn't rely on it alone. I suggest the site Magoosh, especially for quant. You have to pay for it but it is very thorough and has so many videos, explanations and practice questions. It's worth the money.

The practice tests are more valuable than the actual test taking tips in the book, which are just the same tips from previous editions. Still helped me get a decent grade but id recommend just going to thier website and doing the online test only option.

What a great book. I do feel prepared for the exam now and this comes with extra content to use online :) The key works for a really long time too.

I bought this book because I needed to study and freshen up my skills in order to take the GRE exam. After being out of school for the last 6 years I made the decision to go to graduate school. This book has been extremely helpful guiding me to the areas I need to improve on.The practice exams are good and the explanations are useful. My only advise is to add the extra exam books from the test manufacture themselves. It really helps in conjunction with this book.

I like the book. I followed the plan recommended and up my score by 17. It definitely helped me. Minor errors were noted but not enough to affect someone scores. There are many problems to work on and their rationales.

Well I have not taken the test yet, but I appreciate how this book breaks down potential testing material and repeatedly tests the information it teaches.

I read this book about 20 or 25 years ago when the "Troubles" in Ireland were still a big, tragic mess. Thank God that's pretty much history (or at least appears to be). It's an enlightening read about the lousy situation the Catholics in Ulster faced, what it was like to grow up in that, how the mess developed over time, how the authorities often did the absolute wrong thing, and how ordinary people almost naturally and necessarily became radicalized. Taking human nature as something relatively constant and transposing the ingredients to any other place and time, we get a pretty disturbing picture of the possibilities. Or put in another way, you can extract some general principles from the Irish troubles, look around the world, change a few terms such as Ulster to Kenya or the Balkans, and the underlying patterns are pretty consistent. It's all too explicable. It amazes me that this Enlightenment notion of the perfectibility of human nature wasn't among the millions killed off by Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Idi Amin and our other 20th Century greats. In his 1962 Nobel Prize acceptance speech John Steinbeck said, "I hold that a writer who does not passionately believe in the perfectibility of man has no dedication nor any membership in literature." What a fool.

McCann's book is a brilliant look at the Troubles and the impact on his home town of Derry. Far too often, all we see of the troubles is stone throwing youths or bombs going off in Britain, with no explaination of how it got to this point. McCann shows brilliantly the historical context from which the troubles were spawned, and in doing so demolishes completely the myth of two tribes with no common ground. Essential reading for anyone interested in learning more about the politics of Northern Ireland.

Wow was the author well connected and could travel nearly anywhere in Europe and have a castle to stay at. Though Russian royalty, she did indeed suffer during the war in Germany. She always seemed to have men around her giving her things and doing things for her. Neat. She was very matter of fact in her and others deprivations, almost aloof in it all though it does not in any way detract from the horror of what she saw or lived through. Crawling through the woods on hands and knees looking for mushrooms to eat to stave off hunger in the closing days shows she was no willowing flower. After the war she married an American soldier and they made their life in Paris. She had a stunning command of various languages which was very helpful for her. Would have loved to know more about her life after the war. Highly recommended.

I bought this book for a course I'm taking and as I began reading I found it a little boring. However the diary gradually builds a head of steam as the Allied bombings begin, the Valkerie plot is exposed and finally the Russians advance on Germany with Berlin as their main objective. Missie must make her escape but what about her sense of duty towards friends and family, many missing? What about all her comrades swept up in Hitler's mad revenge against the Valkerie conspirators, both those who participated and those who didn't but were named anyway? And how does she and the rest Berlin adjust to a dysfunctional and quickly derailing system who face the obliteration of their treasured cities and homes foisted upon the them by a lunatic leader who refuses to surrender?Missie emerges as an intelligent and keen observer who is able to describe the madness descending on Germany with a dispassion and a lack of self-pity.I was surprised by the shortage of food she had to deal with having been under the impression the standard of living remained fairly high in Germany during the war. I also found the descriptions of the effect of the relentless bombing on her and the populace to be a real education. I was unaware of how bad it was. Surely most of the survivors suffer from PTSD.I remember studying the bombed out skyline of Heidelberg when I was in post-war Germany. Now I understand what it took to create that skyline.I was to learn the attempted assassination of Hitler was largely unpopular in GermanyI was impressed with how the public servants kept at their duty of repairing the infrastructure, the communications, rail lines, roadways, etc in the face of what had to be almost impossible obstacles.The relative unpopularity of the war among the populace intrigued me. I was unclear about that and the size of the Valkerie plot supports Missie's claims about the anti-Nazi attitude of many. Hitler executed 10,000 people for their participation although I suspect many were marginal figures if not innocent. I appreciate Missie's integrity, optimism, strength of character and unusual intelligence that seems to somehow rise above her circumstances. She does not appear to have descended into bitterness or cynicism and has brought the wartime experience of the common man in Germany to life for me in a way no scholarly textbook could. I treasure what we have in the US more than ever.

Princess Marie Vassiltchikov' "Berlin Diaries 1940-1945" is a contemporaneous look at wartime Berlin from a different "angle" than either William Shirer's or Bella Fromm's diaries. "Missie" Vassiltchikov was a royal Russian emigree from Lithuania who left Russia after the 1917 revolution. By the early 1940's, the soon-to-be-stateless sisters - Missie and Tatiana - settled in Berlin in the White Russian colony. Their parents were elsewhere in Europe - Rome, Kaunas, Vienna - and the Vassiltchikov sisters had little money but lots of contacts. They found jobs in wartime Berlin in government agencies and survived the endless British and American air raids that turned Berlin - and other German cities - to rubble. Parts of Missie's diary - kept on the sly - describe in detail the bombings and other wartime hardships - rationing of food and other day-to-day necessities - and other parts are about her work and social life. If life in wartime Berlin was difficult - and often downright deadly - Missie did not lack for company. She was related to, or friends with, most of the aristocratic families in central Europe. Most of these folk were in the same economic boat Missie was in - barely afloat - but others hung on to some semblance of their former good lives. Missie and Tatiana - who was to marry Prince Paul Metternich-Winneburg during the war - went to parties both at restaurants and private homes of diplomats and other wealthy Germans. But as the bombs fell and the war turned from the German lead after the Battle of Stalingrad, many of Missie's important friends - both in the military and out - began to plot the overthrow of Adolf Hitler and his government.Who were these conspirators, whose ultimate plan to assassinate Hitler in the "Wolfslair" in Poland and take over the German government in a coup upon his death in July, 1944 failed so miserably? Not only did Hitler survive the attempt but government officials still loyal to him put down the coup. The conspirators - members of the aristocracy, the landed gentry, the clergy, the Prussian military and others - had a wide range of beliefs and reasons for their participation. Some reasons were noble and some were self-serving. And Missie Vassiltchikov claims in her diary that she was involved in the plot, but was she really, and if so, how much? Many of her friends and acquaintances were involved and many lost their lives as a result. I have a feeling - after having read her contemporaneous diary - that she was on the periphery and was lucky not to be implicated with the others.Missie survived the war and was reunited with her parents and siblings. She had fled to Vienna in the waning days of the war to act as a nurse, and after the war she met an American officer who she married and had a family with. She lived til the mid 1970's and her wartime diary - along with side notes to the text - was first published by her brother, in 1985. Her diary is a good, if not slightly perplexing, testament of the times from a distinct viewpoint. Her diary is a good one to read with Bella Fromm's diary.

I like to read of books about World War II, because it was the biggest story during my lifetime. I have read many books, and this is one of the most insightful. Marie Vasiltchikov came from a privileged family and lived through WWII as an employee of the German government and a friend of influential people. She and many of her friends took part in a covert anti-Nazi effort, including the July 20, 1944 effort to assassinate Hitler. In this book, she gives an intimate day-by-day account of life in Berlin (and other places as well) during the war. I was surprised to learn how early the German people started experiencing shortages of food and other essentials as a result of the war. I was also surprised to see how significantly the British and American bombing impacted the lives of the German people so very early in the war. This is clearly one of the best books I have read about WWII--and I have read many.
