While reading HTML, XHTML & CSS Bible, I was surprised to find that most of the most basic HTML markup codes have been deprecated. Classic codes which were the first codes people historically learned about markup language, like bold , italic , underline , center

and font tags have all been essentially deleted from the language while the currently preferred method to adjust these has been changed to CSS.I heard estimates of around 30 HTML tags that had been deprecated with the idea that the styling should be handled in CSS vice HTML. (Charlesworth, 1999) This left me wondering why we even have HTML any more. Is it only to define divs, ids, headlines and paragraphs, leaving all other styling to CSS.So, did CSS kill HTML?While reading about the modern website, some authors argue that you can't build a modern website without CSS and JavaScript, which certainly seems in line with other information I've read. (Marks, 2013) But the HTML/CSS Bible noted that while dozens of HMTL 4 tags have been deprecated, like the tag for background color, but it adds that dozens more tags are being added. So, it looks like the world of digital publishing is simply in transition.According to one author that flux surrounds the transition from pure document to interactive content. (Roberts, 2013) In fact, he calls it evolution. "By using coding languages such as HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, Jquery, and Ajax, the movement on the page is completely compatible with any device," Roberts explains. He reasons that the remarkable change in HTML tags and the rise in significance of CSS is due largely to the changing variety of platforms on which people are viewing web content. This seems logical as CSS gives us the remarkable ability to systematically change a range of content according to screen size, letting us tease out the specific common elements like divs, ids, paragraphs and headers from HTML that will be visible in specific CSS coded font, color, size, etc., according to whether the user is viewing the content on a smart phone, tablet or flat screen TV. The idea that the users' device is driving the change in web design toward more deep reliance on CSS seems reasonable to me.This book gives a great overview of those various elements, but it's hard to capture what's happening in this field because its changing so rapidly. This book accurately describes that rapid change while simultaneously giving a beginner something to work with during the tsunami of transitioning technologies.

We've been in the web development business for over 11 years and have watched so much change in that time. We're often asked what tools are vital to learning how to work in our field. Many from the 'bible' series books have been on our office shelves over the years. This one is the latest to actually take up residence on each of our desks as a regular reference tool. Buy it, use it, use those nifty post-it flags & highlighters all over it, and when the pages start falling out, tape them back in & keep using it. As for the bad reviews - my suggestion is that if you're advanced in HTML or looking for advanced techniques in CSS there are books for that, too. It takes an entire library of reference books to stay up with all the changes & aspects of this industry, and as you grow beyond the levels found here add to your collection, but this one really is important to your library!

The HTML book provides not only the foundation that is needed but also the more advanced techniques that are needed to make a website. With so many do it yourself quick click sites becoming available, many do not know the core basics needed to make a nice site or to fix a site should things go wrong. This book has proven to be a very helpful guids.

This up to date HTML coding book is a good one. It gives you an inside look at HTML4 and also goes into some of the key elements that HTML 5 will hold. I am pleased with the book, and I feel you would be also. Anyone wanting to learn HTML 4, and be able to write code, using CSS, and HTML 4 and going into 5 will benefit from the information provided.

If you are an experienced coder looking for an strict HTML, XHTML, or CSS reference, I suggest you move on to another title. If you are a novice in HTML using a WYSIWYG editor and want to start getting into the HTML code itself, then this is a good book for you. I bought this book to refresh myself in HTML, and CSS being away from it for several years. I program in VB and VC++ and have many programming references that are excellent and very concise. Unfortunately this book is neither. The writers persistently wander off on long winded tangents that seem to ramble on and on.... and on! The analogies had me scratching my head wondering just what exactly the comparative was? There are many small chapters in the last half of the book that are nothing but fluff and offer no real information. In closing, there is useful information in this book for the novice. However it is not complete or in any particular order. Happy hunting.

This is the definitive guide on HTML, XHTML, and CSS. I use it every day and can't live without it!

This book phase already helped me with web design and all I did was flip through it can't wait to set down and read it.

This is an older text, but every web developer should have one or two of them laying around. The hidden gem in this book is the chapter on XML. Also, it is nice to have a book like this for historical reference. You will be amazed at how far things have come. Don't ignore this book just because it does not say HTML5.
